THE OPPORTUNITY

Emerging from the pandemic in a strong position to expand its programs and services, Silverlake Independent Jewish Community Center seeks an experienced leader.  SIJCC recently developed a strategic plan. With this draft plan as a guide, the Executive Director will envision and lead the organization’s expansion, which includes finalizing and operationalizing the strategic plan.

The Executive Director serves as the chief executive officer and public face of SIJCC, reporting to the Board of Directors and representing the organization.  This individual will provide leadership for all aspects of the organization, overseeing a budget of three million dollars and ensuring effective management of programs and events serving thousands of constituents. The Executive Director is responsible for leading a team of 10 full time staff members as well as 45 full and part time teachers / facilitators.  This individual will directly supervise the Senior Director of the Childhood Development Center, the Director of Youth and Family Programs, the Director of Community Programs, the Campus Operations Manager and the Giving and Communications Specialist.

CORE COMPETENCIES

The Executive Director will be an inspiring and visionary leader with a passion for community-building and a commitment to inclusivity.  The ideal candidate will have significant leadership experience with demonstrated ability to raise funds.

Visionary Leader

The Executive Director will be future-oriented and capable of seeing and communicating a strong vision for SIJCC.  This leader will be able to inspire the community, both internal and external, toward that vision. They will see opportunities and pathways, be proactive and able to anticipate and address changes and challenges.

Fundraising Expert

The Executive Director is responsible for creating, in partnership with the board, and executing on a sustainable fund development strategy to support SIJCC’s vision.  The Executive Director will be skilled at working closely with the board to steward existing donors, identifying new donors and funding sources, and otherwise increasing current levels of both giving and earned income.  This individual will be able to cultivate strategic relationships within and outside of the core SIJCC community and lead the organization’s capital campaign.  SIJCC has a strong base of prospective major donors but has not realized the potential of this community resource.

Community-builder

The Executive Director is the outward-facing voice of SIJCC, representing the organization to constituents, stakeholders, and the broader community.  This leader will be able to build trusting and collaborative relationships through authentic, visible, and transparent interactions.  This leader will be self-aware, poised and able to expertly navigate communal dynamics and complex relational challenges across lines of difference. These differences will sometimes be quite sensitive, drawing on topics like Jewish identity; local, state, and federal politics; and Israel. In keeping with our community's proud tradition of independence, an ideal candidate will be a compassionate and productive facilitator of dialogue, making space for a diversity of thought as they strive to build Jewish community.

Excellent Manager

The Executive Director will have a deep understanding of effective management practices and will be able to build shared accountability and commitment within the SIJCC team and leaders to advance the organization's mission.  This leader will understand the value of investing in relationships and systems to produce results and a healthy organizational culture that endures over time.  They will promote a culture of collaboration across the organization and will inspire trust and confidence among team members.

Entrepreneur

The Executive Director will demonstrate an ability to thrive in uncertainty.  This leader must be open, eager to learn and able to address emerging issues with flexibility and adaptability. They will be able to promote a culture of innovation, anticipating trends and identifying opportunities. The ED will demonstrate a willingness to take (and ability to minimize) appropriate risk.  They will gather the facts, anticipate barriers, and plan carefully for the future.  Finally, they will have experience designing and launching new initiatives.

Inclusive

The Executive Director will embody the Jewish value of inclusiveness.  This leader will be able to create an environment where staff and community members, particularly those most negatively impacted by systems of oppression, experience belonging and thrive.  The ED will be committed to the work of creating a “big tent” Jewish community and tearing down systems of oppression, including oppressive systems within organized Jewish life.  They will be able to uplift and actively make space for those in the community who are marginalized, especially BIPOC, multiracial, trans, queer, and interfaith folks.

Expert Financial Manager

The Executive Director is responsible for the financial health and well-being of SIJCC.  SIJCC is emerging from the pandemic in the strongest fiscal position in its history. The ED must steward and build on this recent success. This individual will be skilled and experienced in non-profit financial management.  They will be able to set organizational and budgetary priorities in partnership with the board aligned with the mission and vision of SIJCC.  The ED will be able to oversee all financial matters including long-term budgeting, ongoing financial performance, and financial strategy.

Jew-ISH

The Executive Director will embody a contemporary, progressive and inclusive view of Judaism.  They will be non-traditional and also deeply rooted in tradition.  They will possess background knowledge of Judaism and be able to call on it, understanding and caring about Jewish culture, rituals, and traditions.  They will be able to nurture and grow a Jewish community that comprises inter-faith, unaffiliated, and marginalized Jewish individuals.  The ED should possess an understanding of the unique dynamics of Jewish institutions in Los Angeles and be skillful at building connections and engaging in dialogue about contemporary Jewish issues across them.
