Kol Dorot Temple Administrator
Kol Dorot is seeking a self-motivated professional to fill the role of Temple Administrator. Candidates should have strong communication skills, a balance of organizational and interpersonal ability, and enthusiasm for helping to manage one of the fastest-growing Reform Jewish communities in Northern New Jersey.
Kol Dorot is a Reform synagogue located in Oradell, New Jersey. We currently have 350+ families and, in the next several months, will be welcoming another synagogue community with approximately 125 more families. Our synagogue prides itself on its reputation for a meaningful focus on Jewish life, an innovative Religious School, and a vibrant Early Learning Center.
The Administrator plays a key role in supporting the smooth and effective operation of synagogue life and programming. The Administrator provides the day-to-day management of communication, fiscal and administrative affairs, and has direct supervisory jurisdiction over all administrative, security, and building maintenance personnel.
The Administrator takes direction from and is accountable to the Rabbi, President, and Board of Trustees. The Administrator collaborates and coordinates with the Rabbi, Cantor, Director of Education, and Director of the Early Learning Center on administrative matters.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
1. Managing Kol Dorot’s administrative activities, such as:
- Creating a welcoming office environment and act as administrative face of Kol Dorot;
- Overseeing all office policies and systems;
- Serving as the central purchasing agent, assuring cost effectiveness;
- Managing the rental of facilities to members and the community at large; and
- Maintaining various temple records.
2. Fiscal responsibilities include:
- Assisting the Finance Committee in the preparation of the annual budget;
- Working closely with the Treasurer(s) on day-to-day financial operations and managing the finances within the approved budget;
- Supervising payroll administration;
- Acting as a point of contact for all member finance inquiries; and
- Communicating with the temple’s outside accounting service as needed.
3. Supervising office staff, currently consisting of two administrative staff and a part-time bookkeeper, including:
- Developing job descriptions, documenting and evaluating performance, and managing salary administration; and
- Overseeing continued training of staff and managing entry/exit of staff as needed.
4. In conjunction with the Facilities Manager, ensuring that temple facilities and property is kept in a state of cleanliness and repair, and confirming that custodial help is available when needed.
5. Program Coordination, Calendar Development and Management:
- Working alongside the Rabbi and others to coordinate scheduling of activities for all temple happenings;
- Ensuring temple calendar is maintained for internal and external use; and
- Providing the administrative and logistical support required for the smooth running of events.
Salary range is $60,000-$65,000. Benefits include two weeks paid vacation, sick leave, and time off for all State, Federal, and Jewish holidays.
Our ideal candidate will bring the following:
- Minimum of three years’ management experience in a synagogue or non-profit;
- Track record of responsibility for operations, events, communications, and community relations;
- Leadership experience, including working with staff and volunteers;
- Experience in personnel matters, specifically a proven aptitude working with a tight-knit staff, including hiring, providing oversight, and reviews;
- Strong financial-management background, including budgets, financial reporting, and spreadsheets;
- Working understanding of Jewish life and practices;
- Experience with, and knowledge of, computers and computer programs to support calendars, bookkeeping, membership, and donor management; and
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
