Chief Jewish Life Officer

Sixth & I is seeking a full-time Chief Jewish Life Officer, reporting to the CEO, to join our Jewish Life team as its senior leader to oversee Sixth & I’s wide array of program offerings and community-building endeavors designed with those in their 20s and 30s in mind. This position is a member of Sixth & I’s Executive Team, collaborating with senior leadership to set strategic priorities and objectives for the organization. This role is ultimately responsible for setting the long-term strategic vision of a programming team serving over 6,000 people annually.

This position offers a hybrid schedule of remote, in-office, and in-person events-driven work.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Department Leadership & Capacity Building

• Serve as the senior leader overseeing all of Sixth & I’s Jewish Life work, directly supervising the rabbinical team, Director of Jewish Life, and Director of Community Engagement.
• Lead and mentor all Jewish Life team staff while fostering a culture of empowerment, collaboration, accountability, and continuous learning.
• Develop, manage, and steward the annual Jewish Life departmental budget, aligning financial resources with strategic priorities, programmatic impact, staffing needs, and long-term sustainability.
• Identify earned and contributed revenue opportunities to bolster sustainability.
• Lead ongoing departmental evaluation efforts to assess program impact and identify attendance and engagement trends to inform direction of future offerings.
• Model and encourage collaboration across teams to maximize efficiency and bolster organization’s culture of communication, respect, and resourcefulness.
• Annually, review all individual team member goals to ensure alignment with department and organizational strategic priorities and objectives.
• Lead recruiting, hiring, and onboarding for new Jewish Life team members, assigning hiring managers for particular roles as appropriate.

Innovative Program Ideation and Execution

• Champion strategic innovation within Jewish Life by identifying emerging community needs, testing new models of engagement, and strengthening existing programs in ways that advance Sixth & I’s mission and distinguish its position in the local Jewish organizational landscape.
• Set the vision, strategy, and goals for Jewish Life programming in thought partnership with the Jewish Life team and other internal stakeholders, balancing community needs, organizational capacity, financial considerations, and long-term strategic priorities.
• Oversee all High Holiday offerings and convene staff from across departments to foster collaborative efforts.
• Directly support Jewish Life programming by staffing programs as needed and regularly attending classes, services, holiday celebrations, and social programming to meet with community, understand participant experience, and gather feedback.

Impactful Executive Team Participation

• Serve as the Jewish Life team voice on the Executive Team, offering the department’s perspective in institutional decision-making and contributing to organization-wide strategy, priorities, culture, and long-term sustainability.
• Collaborate with other executive leadership to establish strategic priorities and goals for the organization.
• Uplift the Jewish ethos of Sixth & I’s organizational values and, in consultation with clergy team, offer a Jewish lens through which to make decisions on justice and equity-related programming, communications, and staff culture work.
• Ensure Jewish Life vision and resulting work align with the strategic priorities and objectives of the organization.
• Work in partnership with Development department to write Jewish Life program grants, enact program evaluation, and identify new opportunities for funding.
• Attend major donor events and meetings at the request of CEO or Chief Development Officer.
• Collaborate with Communications Team to help inform marketing materials and digital content that support Jewish Life offerings and align with the Sixth & I brand voice.
• Serve as the primary Jewish Life liaison to Sixth & I’s Board of Directors, attending board meetings, and preparing reports to help them understand the vision, impact, opportunities, and challenges the team faces.
• Provide strategic counsel to the CEO, Executive Team, and Board of Directors on emerging trends, challenges, and opportunities affecting the Jewish communal field locally and nationally, positioning Sixth & I to continue to be an innovator in reaching and serving those in their 20s and 30s.

WHO YOU ARE

• An experienced team leader and skilled people manager. You have at least 5 years of experience as a senior team leader and at least 10 years of professional management experience with multiple direct reports.
• Emotionally intelligent. You balance kindness and candor. You’re able to navigate sensitive conversations with a diverse set of internal and external stakeholders with tact, patience, and care.
• Someone with deep affection for Jewish education, culture, and community and a sincere belief in its potential to make people’s lives more intentional and meaningful.
• A strategic innovator. You seize opportunities for experimentation and innovation, understanding how to energize your team with new ideas while remaining aligned with big picture objectives. You understand and are attuned to the changing landscape of Washington DC’s Jewish community, as well as how Sixth & I fits within that and can continue to push the envelope.
• Organized and systems oriented. You have demonstrated experience in project management, strategic planning, and using data to inform strategy and communicate impact. You know how to manage multiple projects and create systems and processes to help a team successfully meet its goals.
• A team player. You are receptive to feedback and demonstrate care and concern for Sixth & I’s organizational reputation in your approach to work. You are passionate about being part of a team-oriented, mission-driven organizational culture.

SALARY & BENEFITS

• Salary: Sixth & I has a comprehensive pay equity philosophy which weighs years of experience at a particular job level and competency to determine an equitable salary within our organization. This role sits in Sixth & I’s Level 5 salary band with an anticipated salary between $140,000 and $160,000.
