Synagogue Ritual Coordinator & Torah Reader
Position Overview
Shaarei Tikvah is a warm and vibrant congregation in Scarsdale, NY affiliated with the Conservative movement. We are seeking a knowledgeable, organized, and compassionate Ritual Coordinator to support the ritual and spiritual life of our community. This role combines Jewish ritual expertise with strong administrative, organizational, and interpersonal skills. The ideal candidate is passionate about worship, Jewish learning, and community-building, and will help foster meaningful engagement in congregational life.
Working closely with clergy, professional staff, lay leaders, volunteers, and students, the Ritual Coordinator will help cultivate an engaging, participatory, and spiritually meaningful environment for congregants of all ages.
Responsibilities
Worship & Ritual Coordination
- Serve regularly as Ba’al/Ba’alat Koreh during Shabbat, holiday, and weekday services, as needed to support clergy
- Lead weekday morning minyan approximately several times per month
- Coordinate Torah reading schedules and support the preparation of Torah readers
- Help ensure that services run smoothly and reflect the congregation’s ritual standards and values
Congregational Engagement
- Recruit, train, and support lay leaders for service leadership and ritual participation, including:
- Torah readers
- Service leaders
- Minyan participantsCoordinate shiva minyanim and volunteer coverage
- Teach trope in the Religious School
- Attend and support Spiritual Life Committee meetings
- Develop meaningful relationships with congregants, students, families, and volunteers
- B’nei Mitzvah tutoring for additional compensation
Qualifications
- Familiarity with Jewish law, liturgy, and Conservative Jewish ritual practice
- Demonstrated proficiency as a Ba’al/Ba’alat Kriyah, with strong Torah and Haftarah reading and cantillation skills
- Experience coordinating synagogue ritual operations preferred
- Exceptional organizational and administrative skills
- Musical and vocal ability
- Warm, approachable, and relationship-oriented interpersonal style
- Ability to recruit, train, and motivate volunteers
- Ability to collaborate effectively with clergy, professional staff, and lay leadership
- Flexibility to work weekdays, Shabbat, and Jewish holidays as needed
Schedule & Compensation
- Approximately 15-20 hours per week, subject to further negotiation of duties
- Schedule includes weekday, Shabbat, and holiday responsibilities
- Compensation commensurate with experience, negotiated duties, and hours (approx. $30,000-$40,000 annually)
- 1 year contract, with possibility of extension
