Director of Youth and Family Education - Pasadena Jewish Temple & Center 

Pasadena Jewish Temple & Center (PJTC) is a vibrant Conservative synagogue in Pasadena, CA consisting of about 430 families with a religious school of approximately 150 students and an active USY. PJTC is seeking a Director of Youth and Family Education to direct the Louis B. Silver Religious School (LBSRS) serving pre-K-12th grade, and lead PJTC’s youth and family educational programming. The Director is responsible for nurturing an engaging and inclusive Jewish learning environment by working with clergy, staff and lay leadership to foster families who are Jewishly knowledgeable, proud, and engaged in broader PJTC life and the Jewish community. The Director will supervise the LBSRS religious school teachers, Office Assistant, and Team Madrichim (high-school-aged teaching assistants) as well as the Assistant Director of Youth Engagement and Education. This full-time position works in close collaboration with the Rabbi, Cantor and Executive Director.  

About this Position

 PREFERRED SKILL SET AND EXPERIENCE

• Extensive knowledge and love of Jewish life, ritual, history and texts.
• Substantial proven experience in Jewish curriculum development and implementation; a master’s degree in Jewish Education is preferred.
• Experience with managing a school, including supervising teachers, classroom management, and promoting professional development.
• Strong interpersonal skills and terrific rapport with youth and families.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills (e.g. direct, concise, polite, comprehensive, friendly and welcoming).
• Experience working collaboratively with clergy, staff, committees, parents, and lay leadership.
• Mission-driven to encourage Jewish learning and cultivate a warm community among young people and families where Judaism is meaningful, welcoming, and part of their real lives (not just “a class” or “a program” they attend).

RESPONSIBILITIES

Primary responsibilities:

• Establish and implement a curriculum for LBSRS, addressing the needs of diverse learners with various skills and backgrounds while ensuring achievement of educational benchmarks in consultation with the Rabbi.
• Manage LBSRS, including both day-to-day and long-term operations,  including calendar coordination, staff hiring, mentorship and professional development, curriculum training, supervision, and evaluation, as well as budget planning and financial oversight.
• Coordinate weekly LBSRS Sunday school-wide t’fillah, and periodic LBSRS class Shabbat dinners and services in partnership with the Rabbi and Cantor. 
• Further develop post-B’nai Mitzvah learning program for continued youth education and participation.
• Coordinate, implement, and participate in engagement for family and youth on Shabbat and holiday services, including but not limited to the High Holy Days, in collaboration with the Assistant Director of Youth Engagement and Education, and the Rabbi, Cantor, and Executive Director.

Additional responsibilities: 

• Supervise the Assistant Director of Youth Engagement and Education whose portfolio includes youth groups (TK-12th grade) and Team Madrichim (the LBSRS teen teaching assistants).
• Collaborate with the Rabbi, Cantor, and Executive Director in the B’nai Mitzvah preparation process.
• Engage with the B’nai Simcha Preschool community and our youngest children, and welcome new families.
• Design opportunities in collaboration with the Rabbi, Cantor, and Executive Director, for joint programming with the wider PJTC community, including family and intergenerational learning. 
• **If the applicant is a rabbi, there is the potential the candidate might help with bimah coverage on Shabbat and or holiday services as needed throughout the year, and officiate life cycle events (e.g. baby namings, weddings, shiva minyans and funerals) in coordination with the Rabbi and Cantor or upon the request of a community member.

The Director of Youth and Family Education duties include but are not limited to:

• Communicating regularly with students, staff, families, and congregation and ensuring teachers communicate with parents.
• Encouraging parent/guardian involvement.
• Supervising upkeep of youth and family education-focused pages of PJTC materials.
• Participating in the planning of, and encourage support for, PJTC fundraising efforts.
• Providing regular written updates to the PJTC Board and attend board meetings.
• Meeting quarterly with LBSRS Education Committee(s) (advisory) and engage them in policy and practice conversations.

Salary: $90,000-$120,000, commensurate with experience
