Bnai Mitzvah Tutors 

Are you interested in helping students prepare for their bnai mitzvah? 

Temple Sholom of Chicago, a vibrant, thriving Reform congregation, is seeking knowledgeable, skilled, warm and engaging Bnai Mitzvah tutors to study in person with our students. 

Qualifications: 

• Candidate must have strong proficiency and accurate knowledge of Torah Trope, Haftarah Trope (or is a quick study with a willingness to learn), Shabbat morning and afternoon prayers  

• The ideal candidate has prior experience teaching students in this setting, and can adapt instruction to different learning styles and skill levels 

• Strong Hebrew reading skills 

• Patient, professional, organized, motivated, and reliable 

• Strong communication skills – with parents, student, supervisor, and clergy 

Responsibilities 

• Teach Torah and Haftarah chanting in preparation for bnai mitzvah 

• Teach or review prayers students will be leading at their bnai mitzvah 

• Provide structured, individualized and supportive instruction 

• Communicate progress regularly with parents and bnai mitzvah team 

Schedule: 

30-minute lessons are given on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday afternoons/evenings and/or Sunday afternoons, typically beginning ten months prior to service date. Each student receives 36 tutoring sessions. 

Approximately 2-4 hours weekly - depending on how many students the tutor wishes to take on at a time. All tutoring should be done in person at Temple Sholom. (Occasional meetings on zoom are permitted.) 

Compensation: 

$60 per hour of tutoring, some flexibility depending on experience
