Job Type: Part-time 25-29 hours/week | In-Person (with potential hybrid flexibility) 

About Us 

Temple Beth El is a vibrant and welcoming synagogue committed to Jewish life, learning, and community. We are seeking a detail-oriented and mission-driven Staff Accountant to support the financial operations of the congregation and ensure accuracy, transparency, and compliance across all accounting functions. 

Position Summary 

The Staff Accountant is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, preparing financial reports, and supporting budgeting, audits, and compliance. This role works closely and in support of the Controller.  

Key Responsibilities 

Accounting & Financial Reporting 

  • Maintain the general ledger and ensure accurate recording of all financial transactions 
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements 
  • Perform bank, credit card, and balance sheet reconciliations 
  • Prepare journal entries and analyze variances 

Accounts Payable & Receivable 

  • Process vendor invoices, payments, and reimbursements 
  • Manage accounts receivable, including dues, tuition, donations, and program revenue 
  • Coordinate with staff on billing, collections, and member account questions 

Budgeting & Forecasting 

  • Assist with annual budget preparation and ongoing forecasting 
  • Monitor budget performance and provide variance analysis 

Donations, Grants & Compliance 

  • Track and properly record donations, pledges, grants, and restricted funds 
  • Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and donor restrictions 
  • Support preparation for audits, tax filings, and financial reviews 

Systems & Collaboration 

  • Utilize and maintain accounting and synagogue management systems 
  • Work collaboratively with clergy, staff, and lay leadership 
  • Recommend process improvements and internal controls 

*Other financial responsibilities and duties as appropriate, needed and assigned.  

Qualifications 

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, or related field 
  • 2–5 years of accounting experience; nonprofit experience strongly preferred 
  • Experience with accounting software (QuickBooks Online) 
  • Familiarity with synagogue systems such as ShulCloud and Bill Divvy a plus 
  • Strong Excel skills and attention to detail 
  • Ability to communicate financial information clearly to non-financial stakeholders 
  • Work in-person
