Executive Director

Beth Israel Synagogue is a thriving Orthodox Jewish institution serving its membership and the broader Jewish community through daily tefillah, robust adult and youth programming, lifecycle support, and communal leadership. Our campus operates year-round and includes synagogue facilities, event space, and community infrastructure that support a vibrant religious and communal life. We are seeking a strategic, organized, mission-aligned Executive Director to partner with the Senior Rabbi and Board in advancing the synagogue’s vision, ensuring strong day-to-day operations, and cultivating a warm, professional, Torah-aligned community culture.

Position Overview
The Executive Director serves as the synagogue’s Chief Operating Officer, responsible for overseeing operations, finances, staff, facilities, and systems. This role balances leadership and collaboration, ensuring that the institution functions smoothly while empowering staff, volunteers, and lay leadership to succeed. The Executive Director works closely with the Senior Rabbi, President, and Board of Directors, translating vision and policy into effective execution.

Key Responsibilities
Organizational Operations
• Oversee daily synagogue operations and administrative systems
• Maintain calendars, membership records, and operational workflows
• Develop and maintain clear procedures and systems to support efficiency and accountability
Financial Oversight
• Prepare and manage the synagogue budget in partnership with the President and Treasurer
• Oversee billing, payroll, accounts payable and receivable
• Provide regular financial reporting and support long-term fiscal planning
Staff Leadership
• Supervise and support non-rabbinic staff
• Foster a professional, collaborative, and supportive workplace culture
• Ensure staff have the resources, clarity, and guidance needed to succeed
Facilities & Security
• Oversee maintenance, safety, and security of synagogue facilities and grounds
• Manage vendor relationships and service contracts
• Ensure readiness for Shabbat, holidays, and major events
Community & Stakeholder Relations
• Serve as a professional and welcoming point of contact for members and families
• Support volunteer engagement and board initiatives
• Work collaboratively with the Senior Rabbi on operational matters, ensuring alignment with halachic standards
Events & Programming Support
• Coordinate logistics for synagogue programs and major events
• Support High Holiday and lifecycle programming in partnership with clergy and committees

Qualifications
• Demonstrated experience in nonprofit, synagogue, or organizational leadership
• Strong organizational, financial, and people-management skills
• Ability to lead systems while remaining attentive to community needs
• Excellent communication and problem-solving abilities
• Familiarity with Orthodox Jewish life strongly preferred

Position Type: Full-time, exempt
Compensation: Competitive and commensurate with experience
