Religious School Principal

The Center for Youth Engagement of Wilshire Boulevard Temple
Part-Time | Approximately 12 hours per week | Los Angeles

The Center for Youth Engagement of Wilshire Boulevard Temple is seeking a Religious School Principal to oversee and support the smooth, joyful operation of our Sunday religious school program at the Glazer Campus (Koreatown). This role is central to creating an environment where students, families, and staff feel welcomed, supported, and excited to be part of a vibrant Jewish learning community.

The Principal serves as the on-site educational and operational leader on Sundays and as a key partner to the CYE staff and clergy throughout the year.

Position Overview

  • Time Commitment: Approximately 12 hours per week, year-round
    • Sunday Hours (School Year): 7:30 AM–2:00 PM on the Glazer Campus (Koreatown)
    • Additional Hours: Time and location flexible within traditional work hours

Responsibilities

During the summer months, the focus shifts toward preparation and planning for a successful school year, including:

  • Supporting the recruitment, hiring, and onboarding of teaching staff
  • Establishing weekly schedules for teachers, clergy, and specialists
  • Preparing for the start of the school year (classroom supplies, teacher materials, office setup)
  • Meeting with and speaking to prospective new families
  • Participating in the planning and execution of staff training

During the academic year, responsibilities include day-to-day leadership and coordination, such as:

  • Managing weekly operational needs to ensure smooth Sunday programming
  • Communicating with the CYE Executive Assistant regarding facilities and setup needs
  • Serve as a point of contact for families, addressing attendance concerns, student social or interpersonal issues, and scheduling challenges in partnership with parents and staff
  • Build and sustain positive, trusting relationships with students and families to support a welcoming, connected learning community
  • Securing substitute teachers as needed
  • Responding promptly and professionally to emails from staff, teachers, and parents
  • Participating in regular staff meetings and staff supervision
  • Preparing holiday-related classroom lessons and coordinating school-wide programming
  • Partnering with clergy to host grade-level parent breakfasts
  • Collaborating with the songleader and clergy team to ensure meaningful, high-quality T’fillah experiences

Additional Expectations

  • Attend at least two Shabbatot per year
  • Participation in teacher appreciation events at the end of the school year (if applicable)

Ideal Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate brings:

  • Previous experience in teaching, camping, or other youth engagement settings, with demonstrated leadership in mentoring, administration, program facilitation, and group management 
  • A calm, grounded demeanor and clear leadership presence
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to respond flexibly and unflustered in real time
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Comfort using technology and digital tools
  • Basic Hebrew reading proficiency and familiarity with Reform T’fillot (or enthusiasm to learn using provided resources)
  • A collaborative spirit and desire to work as part of a professional, mission-driven team

Compensation

  • $30,000–$34,000 annually, commensurate with experience and negotiable
