Middle School Visual Arts Elective Teacher

Description

The Brandeis School of San Francisco seeks a passionate, creative, and engaging visual artist to teach middle school arts electives. We are looking for an individual who is not only a skilled practitioner in the visual arts, but who also loves working with adolescents and believes in the transformative power of artistic expression.

At Brandeis, we believe the arts are a powerful tool for self-expression that help students better understand themselves, their classmates, and their world. Our arts electives are not simply opportunities to learn artistic techniques; they are spaces where students develop habits of mind and heart that will serve them throughout their lives.

Through the creative process, students learn to observe deeply, ask meaningful questions, brainstorm boldly, create across a variety of media, overcome challenges, collaborate effectively, communicate authentically, give and receive feedback, and discover their unique voices. These experiences help cultivate the empathy, resilience, creativity, and ethical awareness that are essential to becoming thoughtful leaders and engaged citizens.

We seek artists who are excited to share both their craft and their way of seeing the world with young people.

Our Philosophy: Ethical Creativity

The work in our arts electives is deeply connected to Ethical Creativity, The Brandeis School of San Francisco's reimagining of the Design Thinking process. Ethical Creativity grounds creative work in awe and wonder while encouraging students to consider the impact, purpose, and ethical dimensions of the ideas they bring into the world.

For middle school students, Ethical Creativity begins with curiosity:

  • Experiencing awe and wonder.?
  • Observing the world closely.?
  • Appreciating beauty and complexity.?
  • Asking questions and identifying challenges.

?

Students then move into creative exploration:

  • Brainstorming possibilities.?
  • Experimenting with materials and media.?
  • Taking creative risks.?
  • Overcoming obstacles.?
  • Collaborating with others.?

Finally, students learn to share their work with intention:

  • Finding and refining their artistic voices.?
  • Communicating ideas effectively.?
  • Giving and receiving critique.?
  • Reflecting on both process and product.?

Position Overview
