Controller 

Temple Beth El 

Bloomfield Hills, MI 

Temple Beth El is a vibrant Reform Jewish synagogue in Bloomfield Hills with close to 1,000 member families. TBE is Michigan’s first Jewish congregation and has been a leader in the Reform movement for generations. The Controller is a full-time, exempt position, reporting to the Executive Director. This person directs all the finance and accounting functions of the Temple, supervises our Senior Accountant, provides both support and guidance to our staff and Board, and interacts with Temple members and the wider community regarding a variety of related topics. We are seeking an experienced professional, with excellent organizational and communication skills, who can both work independently and as part of our dynamic team as we continue to build an exciting future together. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Direct accounting, audit, cash flow, debt, payroll, banking, and reporting. 
  • Prepare, implement and monitor an annual budget 
  • Work directly with Temple staff on budgeting, financial oversight, and year-round questions.  
  • Communicate with and assist congregants with financial matters and collections, work with vendors and outside agencies, rentals, etc. 
  • Prepare financial statements, reports and analyses for the Board, management and other entities. 
  • Perform and supervise accounting functions of payables, receivables, banking and invoicing- including member billing and records, work with outside vendors, purchase requisitions and purchase orders, and contract follow-through. 
  • Manage investment in-house accounting, including unitized endowments, annual spending draws, and monthly performance. 
  • Review and update financial procedures of the organization. 
  • Maintain work papers and accurate records for annual audit. 
  • Direct annual accounting audit. 
  • Administer and provide support for federal, state and private grants and grant writing. 
  • Staff the Investment Committee and Finance Committee  
  • Supervision of the accounting office and staff 
  • Other projects as assigned by the Executive Director 

Personal characteristics include: 

  • Effective analytical, problem solving and organizational skills 
  • Good working knowledge of financial regulations to ensure compliance  
  • Ability to work and interact with people throughout the organization, staff and other individuals including members of the congregation  
  • Effective written and oral communication skills 
  • Ability to teach financial procedures to non-financial leaders and staff 
  • Outstanding character, detail-orientation, and proven ability to prioritize 

Education, training and experience 

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance, Master’s degree preferred 
  • 5 years relevant experience in accounting and finance 
  • Expert knowledge and experience working with Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel; Quickbooks and various accounting and membership database software 
  • ShulCloud knowledge preferred 
  • Experience in a non-profit environment preferred
