JCC Chicago seeks a Major Gifts Officer at a time of great change and significant opportunity in support of nonprofit organizations providing essential services in the community.  The Major Gifts Officer serves as a key member of the team and will be responsible for identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding individuals/families philanthropic support in support of JCC Chicago’s mission and objectives. Reporting to the Chief Advancement Officer, the Major Gifts Officer is responsible for building and managing a portfolio of donors/families for the purpose of deepening engagement among existing major donors, increasing giving among donors, identifying, cultivating and soliciting qualified prospects, ultimately increasing the number of major donors and growing annual revenue for JCC Chicago.

A particular focus of this role will be the engagement and cultivation of alumni connected to JCC Chicago core programming, specifically JCC Camp Chi, which is celebrating its 100th birthday in 2021, as well as Apachi Day Camps and Early Childhood.

Key areas of responsibility: 

Frontline fundraising/Relationship Management (85%)

  • Build and manage a portfolio of prospective donors and donors with the capacity to make major gifts, including program alumni.
  • Identify, research, qualify, and prioritize donors and prospective donors for cultivation and solicitation. Develop comprehensive and customized solicitation and engagement strategies to generate new major gifts, upgrade and sustain current annual major gift donors.
  • Working collaboratively with the Financial Resource Development (FRD) team, President/CEO and board of directors, create donor-centric cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies to transition qualified individuals from individual giving to major gifts.
  • As a member of the FRD team, actively participate in strategy development and help to inform colleagues’ major gifts strategies.
  • Identify planned giving prospects and partner with the Chief Advancement Office, President/CEO and board of directors to secure new legacy gifts as well as collaborate to cultivate existing planned giving donors and/or operational giving at the major gift level.
  • Work with Marketing and Communications Team to develop collateral and materials needed to support major gift and legacy cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.

Other Fundraising Activity (15%)

  • As a member of the FRD Team, the Major Gifts Officer will play a role in ongoing improvements to the systems/processes supporting major gift work, including utilization of the Non-Profit Success Pack (NPSP) technology platform associated with the agency’s overall Salesforce database system.
  • Participate in the hands-on, team approach to shaping and executing donor cultivation, engagement and stewardship opportunities. This includes helping with donor events, mailings, etc.

Key Essential Job Duties/Physical Duties:

  • Ability to sit, stand, bend, twist and/or walk on a frequent basis throughout an 8-hour day.
  • Mobility: Repetitive movement of arms and hands to operate computer, smartphone, keyboard and mouse.
  • Communication: Ability to speak clearly and effectively when interacting with donors, Board Members and general public.
  • Ability to frequently push, pull and lift up to 20 pounds; occasionally may need to lift more than 20 pounds.
  • Mental Abilities:  Attention to detail; manage multiple projects, prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Vision Abilities:  See detail in objects; distinguish between colors, shades and brightness and ability to focus and operate a vehicle or office equipment.

Days/Hours: 
Monday-Friday full time with the ability to travel locally to meet donors and for agency meetings

Requirements:            

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in Business, Fundraising or Non-Profit Management or CFRE designation preferred.
  • Knowledge of and experience in Jewish overnight camping preferred. 
  • A minimum of five years’ experience in fundraising or a related field with experience acquiring donations of five-figures or more.
  • Proficient in constituent management and fundraising software. Salesforce preferred.
  • Previous experience working within the Jewish community preferred.
  • Previous success making cold calls and securing face-to-face meetings with donor prospects.
  • Use of excellent verbal and written communication skills. High degree of emotional intelligence and success managing multiple competing priorities.
  • Goals and results-driven with ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Accountable with an attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to take initiative and anticipate the needs of donors, stakeholders, and colleagues. Proactively share information and communicate effectively both internally and externally. Able to overcome obstacles, work independently and as part of a team.
  • Facility to develop and maintain a strong presence in the philanthropic community, with the social skills to effectively engage community members and leaders, civic and corporate philanthropists, as well as active and prospective donors.
  • Understand fundraising industry standards, including donor solicitation, confidentiality, gift crediting, stewardship, and financial principles that shape the work of fundraising professionals.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to various program and donor meeting locations.
  • Must have reliable transportation, valid driver’s license for at least 24 months, proof of auto insurance (with a minimum $250,000 liability).

The ideal candidate has an eagerness to learn and is an active listener who can help connect donors’ interests with JCC Chicago’s strategic priorities.

Salary:    

$70,000 to $85,000
