Position: Director of Education
Compensation: $95,000-$110,000 plus benefits
Reports to: Rabbi Jordan Millstein

We’re looking for someone with a passion and enthusiasm for Jewish education and Reform Judaism, who is motivated and able to connect and relate to people of all ages. In this role, you’ll have the opportunity to partner with our dynamic clergy and senior staff team as, we seek to implement the goals of our recent visioning process, which includes a focus on engagement and education. We’re looking for someone with the knowledge of contemporary Jewish education and the creativity to generate and implement a vision for innovating our K-7 Religious School program and post-b’nei mitzvah teen programs.

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Religious School: The primary responsibility of the Director of Education (DOE) is to serve as the principal and leader of our Religious School, grades K-7. Our religious school currently has 114 students and meets on Sunday mornings and Tuesday afternoons.
    • The DOE chooses, develops, and implements the curriculum. They recruit, train, and supervise the faculty, both professional teachers and madrichim (teen teaching assistants).
  • Teen Education and Youth Group Programs: The DOE works together with Rabbi Millstein in developing teen programs for Temple Sinai. The DOE will work with the rabbi on hiring and supervising our youth advisor(s).
  • Early Childhood: We are looking for our DOE to be a strong presence in the ECC for the express purpose of building relationships with children and parents. Our goal is to engage these ECC families in the Temple Sinai community and encourage them to choose to join Temple Sinai and Temple’s Religious School.
    • Together with our ECC director, the DOE will determine the most effective way to be present and build those relationships.
  • Adult Learning: The DOE will work collaboratively with Rabbi Millstein and in consultation with lay leaders and staff to determine the adult education offerings of the congregation. The DOE is responsible for administering, publicizing and providing educational and logistical support for these programs.
  • Pulpit and Pastoral: If ordained, the DOE will be a member of our clergy team, along with Rabbi Millstein and Cantor Shamah. Recognizing that the educational work of the DOE is a full-time job, the expectations in terms of pulpit and pastoral work will be limited and determined in consultation with Rabbi Millstein.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in Jewish education preferred, ideally in a Reform Jewish setting.
  • A master’s degree in Jewish education or rabbinic or cantorial ordination preferred.
  • Knowledge of and support for Reform Jewish principles and practices.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Establishes good working relationships with colleagues, staff and lay leaders; works strategically, tactically, and administratively across the organization; uses diplomacy and tact; is warm and approachable; good-natured and nurturing; a good communicator and a good listener.
