Cantor for High Holy Days 2022

Temple Beth Israel - Plattsburgh, NY | Plattsburgh, NY, United States

Posted Date 4/13/2022

Temple Beth Israel in Plattsburgh, NY is seeking a cantor (or a rabbi with cantorial skills) to lead our congregation in prayers for our 2022/5783 High Holy Days observance.

We are a small Reform Jewish congreagation comprised of 70 families; our temple is a vital resource for Jewish life in Northeastern New York. We welcome diverse traditions and lifestyles into our congregational family and offer a meaningful Jewish experience to all who enter our doors.

We are in search of a cantor who will be able, if necessary, to lead services with the participation of the congregation, as we are in a transition period and searching for a rabbi. The cantor should have a pleasant singing voice whose cantorial style invites congregants to participate in the service. We will be using a combination of Shabbat melodies, tradition High Holy Days melodies, and a few more contemporary choices without any accompaniment of musical instruments. Familiarity with Reform services is a plus; our services are from Mishkan Hanefesh, the new Reform machzur.

We are excited to finally be worshipping together again in our sanctuary. As such, to protect all our congregants, we will only accept applications from individuals who are fully vaccinated. If, by fall, we cannot hold services in person, the candidate must be able to lead services via Zoom.

Time required for the following High Holy Days services:

  • Sunday, September 25: Erev Rosh Hashanah,
  • Monday, September 26: Rosh Hashanah, Morning service followed by Tashlich
  • Tuesday, October 4: Kol Nidre
  • Wednesday, October 5: Yom Kippur morning, afternoon and evening, including Yiskor.

Compensation: $ 8,000

The compensation will be considered all-inclusive,and will include all travel and lodging expenses.
