Administrative Assistant – Old Westbury Hebrew Congregation

Old Westbury Hebrew Congregation is a vibrant, egalitarian, and welcoming Conservative synagogue. In addition to providing religious services, OWHC maintains a thriving religious school, provides early childhood programming, and numerous adult education and social programs. Our synagogue facility is also host to a busy nursery school as well as a prestigious Glatt kosher caterer. 

We are looking for an experienced and passionate team-player to join our administrative staff. The Administrative Assistant will often serve as the first “face” of OWHC to congregants and members of the public who visit the synagogue office. Our ideal candidate will be a warm professional with the ability to handle a diverse range of tasks. Reporting to the Executive Director, the administrative assistant will also support the religious school director, clergy, and the Board of Trustees. Our synagogue office is an “all-hands-on-deck” collaborative environment, where all positions pitch in as needed, regardless of formal job descriptions.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Enter and organize data in cloud-based database management system
  • Create documents including flyers for programs and meetings
  • Manage synagogue mailings and congregation-wide emails
  • Open/sort mail, deposit checks (remotely), document scanning and filing
  • Maintain synagogue ritual and program calendars
  • Answer phones and greet visitors to synagogue office
  • Create social media posts for synagogue and religious school
  • Liaison with maintenance staff to ensure facilities preparation for events
  • Miscellaneous administrative tasks as needed


Strongly Preferred Qualifications

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience working in ShulCloud or similar synagogue management software
  • Proficient in Google office suite, MS Word, MS Excel and social media platforms
  • Familiarity with Jewish calendar and traditions
  • Professional friendly demeanor and strong customer service skills
  • Ability to proactively assess and creatively solve problems
  • Graphic design skills a plus

Hours (subject to change):

  • Monday 11 am to 7 pm during the school year; 9 am to 5 pm in the Summer
  • Tuesday thru Thursday 9 am to 5 pm
  • Fridays 9 am to 2 pm

Compensation:

  • $20-$23/hour Commensurate with skills and experience
