Executive Director – Congregation Or Ami

Position Overview:

Congregation Or Ami, a dynamic Reform synagogue serving over 300 families between membership and ECE families, in the Suburbs of Philadelphia, seeks an experienced, collaborative, and mission-driven Executive Director. As the chief administrative officer of the synagogue, the Executive Director partners closely with the Senior Rabbi, professional staff, and Board of Trustees to advance Congregation Or Ami’s mission, strengthen community engagement, and ensure operational excellence across all areas of congregational life.

Reporting directly to the Board of Trustees, and partnering with the Senior Rabbi, the Executive Director serves as a key leader in ensuring the vitality, sustainability, and day-to-day success of our sacred community serving in a similar capacity to a C.O.O.

Core Responsibilities:

Operations & Administration

  • Oversee all daily operations of the synagogue, including facilities, administration, communications, and events.
  • Manage and guide administrative staff, facilities personnel, and outside contractors to ensure smooth functioning.
  • Promote clear, consistent communication between clergy, staff, Board, and congregation.
  • Maintain accurate records, reports, policies, procedures, and membership information.
  • Manage the synagogue calendar and coordinate building use.
  • Coordinate marketing and communication

Finance & Budgeting

  • Collaborate with the Treasurer and Finance Committee to develop and manage the annual budget and financial reporting.
  • Oversee financial operations including accounts receivable/payable, payroll, and compliance.
  • Ensure transparency and accountability in financial stewardship and reporting.
  • Handle member financial obligations with compassion, discretion, and equity.
  • Support and initiate fundraising opportunities

 

Human Resources

  • Hire, supervise, evaluate, and support administrative and facilities staff.
  • Foster a respectful and inclusive work environment rooted in clear expectations and accountability.
  • Lead team-building efforts, professional development, and performance management.
  • Administer employee compensation, benefits, and legal compliance.
  • Manage Payroll

Membership & Community Engagement

  • Serve as a primary point of contact for members, prospective members, and visitors and keep track of interactions in coordination with the senior rabbi to ensure relationship building and pastoral support
  • Support lifecycle events and simchas in coordination with clergy and families.
  • Promote a welcoming and responsive culture that reflects Reform Jewish values.
  • Coordinate onboarding and retention strategies to foster member engagement.

Facilities Management

  • Oversee building and grounds maintenance, repairs, and long-term planning.
  • Coordinate security procedures, vendor relationships, and facility usage.
  • Ensure building readiness for religious services, events, and rentals.
  • Collaborate with the Board to explore and expand revenue-generating opportunities through facility rentals.

Board & Clergy Support

  • Provide administrative support to the Board, clergy, and committees.
  • Attend Board meetings and prepare reports and documentation as needed.
  • Implement strategic decisions and policies of lay and professional leadership.
  • Partner closely with Senior Rabbi to implement vision and mission of Congregation Or Ami

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree or relevant certifications a plus.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in nonprofit, synagogue, or mission-driven organizational leadership.
  • Demonstrated success in operations, finance, HR, and facilities management.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Highly organized, proactive, and capable of managing multiple priorities.
  • Strong team leadership and experience with board governance.
  • Knowledge of Jewish customs, holidays, and synagogue life; affinity for the values and spirit of Reform Judaism.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office or Google Workspace and ShulCloud required;
  • Availability to attend synagogue events, holidays, and services during evenings or weekends as needed.

Compensation:
