This role presents an exciting opportunity for a seasoned Controller to shape and lead the internal finance function of a mission-driven nonprofit organization. Bringing financial operations in-house for the first time, the Controller will play a pivotal role in advancing strategic goals through sound fiscal stewardship. This is a unique chance to partner with leadership in a collaborative and inclusive environment while ensuring excellence in nonprofit financial management.
Key Responsibilities
Oversee all internal financial operations, transitioning from an outsourced finance model
Supervise a part-time bookkeeper (3 days/week), ensuring accuracy in day-to-day transactions
Lead budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting processes
Prepare reports for senior leadership, board meetings, and development stakeholders
Ensure regulatory compliance and adherence to nonprofit accounting standards
Manage donor-restricted funds, private foundation grants, and program-based budgeting
Maintain and improve internal controls, financial procedures, and audit readiness
Collaborate cross-functionally with HR, operations, and fundraising teams
Engage directly with external auditors, banks, and financial institutions
Qualifications & Experience
7–10 years of progressive accounting experience in the nonprofit sector
CPA designation preferred; candidates without a CPA must demonstrate equivalent expertise
Prior experience as a Controller, Assistant Controller, or Senior Accountant with broad responsibility
Strong understanding of restricted funds, nonprofit reporting, and grant compliance
Direct experience with Blackbaud Financial Edge or comparable nonprofit accounting software
Proficiency in Excel and familiarity with platforms such as Shopify, Stripe, or Authorize.net

Work Environment & Benefits
Hybrid work arrangement with preference for candidates available onsite two days per week
Open to candidates in nearby regions (e.g., DC) who can travel to Philadelphia twice monthly
Salary range: $90,000–$105,000, with flexibility for CPA holders
$5,000 relocation stipend available if needed
