Job Description

Basic Function:
The Executive Director serves a critical role at Mosaic Law Congregation. It serves the entire synagogue as the “first point of contact” for communicating with the synagogue in any way. The Executive Director is responsible for the overall management and maintenance of the congregation’s facilities, supervising of non-clergy staff, coordination and overseeing outside-contracted personnel related to the facilities and its uses. The Executive Director has a critical responsibility for setting a tone of welcoming, helpfulness and professionalism with everyone who comes into contact with Mosaic Law.

Essential Duties and Accountabilities (in order of importance):

  • Day to Day operations manager including employee oversight & support HR processes
  • Responsible for the smooth functioning of the office and facilities and Mosaic Law’s internal and external calendars. Uses independent judgment, initiative, and discretion in managing and de-conflicting issues, events, and appointments.
  • Oversees events/receptions
  • Training new employees as necessary
  • High Holiday operational coordination
  • Fundraising Capabilities
  • Support the congregation through various financial activities:
    • Dues Management
    • Cost Reductions
    • Fundraising Programing
    • Oversight of Annual Budget
  • Event Center Responsibilities include supporting the hiring process as MLC opens the venue
    • Center Director oversight and support
    • Support Center contracts / scheduling & Facilitator to outside vendors.
  • Serves as the key liaison for the synagogue with the congregants, Board of Trustees, Jewish community, and other local constituents.
  • Manages the master-calendar and other pertinent staff and volunteers; oversees the preparation of or prepares agendas, brochures, and other collateral documents as needed.
  • Coordinates with the Board various fund-raising activities and events. Plans, coordinates, and assists as requested by the Board in this activity.
  • Coordinates with the Board regarding membership. Oversees the payment of dues, pledges, and fees, and coordinates with the bookkeeper to ensure timely collection. Ensures compliance with Board and synagogue policies. Escalates to the Board as appropriate.
  • Participates in staff meetings as needed to cull information/coordinate with staff to complete action items. Regularly attends Board meetings and attends committee meetings as required.
  • Resolves routine and complex problems with minimal consultation; handles multiple assignments and prioritizes in a constantly changing work environment; recognizes and improves administrative and operational processes as needed.
  • Composes routine/non-routine correspondence; proofs and formats articles, reports and memos; etc.
  • Oversees the budget and receipt of money; supervises synagogue accounting/book-keeping and reimbursements.
  • Tracks PTO, sick time, maternity/paternity leave, health & dental benefits
  • Supervise Clergy Secretary, Bookkeeper, Event Center Director, and Janitorial Staff.
  • Send out all publicity to congregation on behalf of all departments & committees.
  • Edits and writes the Weekly Scroll newsletter
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


  • Must have experience in the maintenance of confidential records and knowledge of office-management principles and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Jewish traditions and customs required.
  • Prior People Management skills desired

Communication & Reasoning:
Excellent communications and interpersonal skills are crucial, as this position will interact regularly with both members and the community. Advanced English and composition skills are necessary, as well as the capacity to exercise diplomacy and deal effectively with a variety of situations in a calm, precise way. Must be able to work in a diverse workplace. Must have ability to create, compose and edit reports, letters, and other materials. Must be able to multi-task, organize resources, and establish priorities in a fast-paced, demanding environment. Must assume responsibility and work effectively with minimum supervision. The ability to coordinate a variety of professional activities, correctly interpret and explain policies and procedures and work well with tight deadlines while maintaining complete confidentiality, are crucial attributes required of this position. An exemplary work ethic and commitment to the mission and goals of the synagogue are required.

Computer Skills & Technical Skills:
Knowledge of planning and scheduling techniques, budget and general accounting practices, voice and e-mail communication systems are essential. Qualified candidates will have advanced Word, Excel, PowerPoint and SharePoint skills. Website management (i.e., file, photo, database tables) a plus.  InDesign knowledge is essential. Knowledge of computer networking and troubleshooting helpful.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent work experience) and five years of increasingly complex administrative experience is desired.

 Previous ED experience preferred
