Monmouth County Synagogue Seeks a Director of Synagogue Life

Full Time or 3/4 time work available

The Director will play a pivotal leadership role in our non-profit organization, and our mission to build a center of community life. The successful candidate will work together with our rabbi to manage engaging programs and efficient operations. In addition, they will play a key role in welcoming people and engaging them in synagogue life.

As a key part of our leadership team, the Director of Synagogue Life will work closely with our volunteer Executive Director and other volunteers. They will be supported by part-time office staff and our part-time Communications Manager. The Director will help oversee and manage several key interrelated areas of congregational life. Responsibility Areas Include:

  1. Programming
  • Work with Rabbi and volunteers to plan and implement our annual calendar of events, including Chanukah Party, Purim event, summer BBQ, Shabbat dinners, Kiddush programs etc (with staff support)
  • Help further develop and plan our programmatic vision for B’nai Israel
  • Plan and implement youth and family programs
  • Collaborate with lay leadership to facilitate successful High Holiday services and other services
  • Hire and oversee some part-time or temp staff to facilitate programs
  • Recruit and engage volunteers for programs
  • Support development of lay-led programs
  • Advertise and recruit participation in programs


  1. Non-Profit Management
  • Promote environment of operational excellence, teamwork and collaboration
  • Serve as an additional front face and welcome people to synagogue
  • Plan and implement membership services and programs (ie. brochure, Membership Directory…)
  • Collaborate with Communications Manager on marketing, website, social media and communications
  • Data base development
  • Provide oversight to daily operations
  • Oversee building and office inventory, interact with vendors


  1. Membership & Annual Campaign
  • Work with Rabbi and Board to support annual campaign
  • Work with Rabbi & Membership Chair to support membership recruitment
  • Facilitate fundraising programs (Kol Nidrei Appeal)
  • Solicit sponsorships and donations for programs and Kiddushes
  • Engage with and thank donors


  1. Community Engagement
  • Reach out and proactively engage with members, friends, stakeholders & prospects
  • Represent synagogue in greater Jewish community
  • Be a strong, active presence in synagogue life


Important Qualities for the Director of Synagogue Life:

  • Team player with strong organization skills and strong attention to detail
  • Excellence in welcoming and engaging people in an organization
  • Demonstrates initiative and resourcefulness, working proactively to anticipate and address key needs
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Demonstrates team leadership skills
  • Ability to manage multiple complex project-based jobs to completion
  • Technical ability and adaptability to help operate a non-profit office


  • 3+ years-experience in non-profit or business management is required, or other relevant experience
  • BA or BS from an accredited college or university is required
  • Knowledge of Judaism and ability to lead Jewish programs
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite
  • Experience working with social media platforms
  • Familiarity with cloud-based data bases (such as ShulCloud)
  • Experience managing tasks to successful and on-time completion
