Temple Beth Sholom in Roslyn Heights seeks a compassionate, organized, and financially astute Executive Director to lead the daily operations of our vibrant Conservative congregation. This is a hands-on leadership role at the center of a warm, engaged, and multigenerational Jewish community.

About Temple Beth Sholom
Temple Beth Sholom (TBS) is a dynamic and inclusive synagogue dedicated to Jewish life, learning, and connection. With active clergy, a thriving Early Childhood Center and Religious School, and generations of committed members, TBS is a cornerstone of Jewish life on Long Island. Our next Executive Director will play a key role in sustaining the spiritual, communal, and financial strength of the congregation.

Overview
The Executive Director serves as the senior administrative and operational leader of Temple Beth Sholom. Reporting to the Executive Board and working in close partnership with clergy and lay leadership, the Executive Director ensures that the synagogue runs efficiently, transparently, and with heart. Responsibilities include managing the synagogue’s finances, operations, facilities, and staff, while nurturing a welcoming environment for members and guests.

Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Management
Oversee all administrative and facility operations of the synagogue.

Supervise, train, and support administrative and maintenance staff; provide guidance to the ECC and Religious School Directors.

  • Partner closely with clergy and lay leadership to align operations with the synagogue’s mission and priorities.
  • Foster a collegial, respectful workplace culture grounded in Jewish values and teamwork.

Finance & Business Operations

  • Manage all fiscal affairs in partnership with the Treasurer and Finance Committee.
  • Oversee budgeting, accounting, payroll, billing, and financial reporting.
  • Ensure timely collection of dues and tuition and accurate payment of expenses.
  • Collaborate with the in-house accounting team and external accountants to maintain sound financial controls and compliance.
  • Monitor cash flow, forecast revenues and expenses, and advise leadership with clear, data-informed insights.
    (Note: The Executive Director need not be an accountant but must possess strong financial literacy and the ability to manage complex financial operations in coordination with accounting professionals.)

Membership & Community Relations

  • Serve as a welcoming and trusted presence for members and prospective families.
  • Support clergy and congregants in lifecycle events and pastoral needs.
  • Partner with committees and schools on engagement, recruitment, and retention.
  • Cultivate a warm, inclusive atmosphere that reflects the spirit of Temple Beth Sholom.

Fundraising & Development

  • Collaborate with clergy and lay leaders to design and implement fundraising and “friendraising” initiatives.
  • Strengthen donor relationships and support recognition programs such as the Joshua Society.
  • Assist in planning community and appreciation events.

Facilities & Security

  • Oversee building operations, maintenance, and capital improvements with the Facilities VP and Head of Maintenance.
  • Manage scheduling, contracts, rentals, and vendor relationships.
  • Supervise security planning and coordination for services, programs, and holidays.
  • Ensure compliance with safety codes and maintain an environment that is safe, clean, and welcoming.

Governance & Administration

  • Support the Executive Board and committees in policy implementation and strategic projects.
  • Review and edit synagogue communications, bulletins, and member correspondence.
  • Maintain positive relationships with vendors, caterers, and community partners.
  • Oversee cemetery administration and coordinate related congregant support.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in nonprofit management, business, or Jewish communal service preferred.
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in synagogue, nonprofit, or community management.
  • Strong understanding of accounting, budgeting, and financial management.
  • Proven leadership and staff supervision skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational abilities.
  • Technologically proficient; familiarity with ShulCloud or similar systems preferred.
  • Commitment to Conservative Jewish values and synagogue life.
