Part-Time Cantor or Rabbi for Congregation Shir Ami, Greenwich, CT

Organization Overview:

Shir Ami is an adult-centered, warm, and welcoming Reform Jewish Congregation. Established in 2004, we have a strong sense of community and commitment to our faith and to each other. We fully embrace creating new ways to bring us closer to each other and closer to God through acts of worship, caring, learning, giving, singing, and celebrating together.

Our congregation of approximately 40+ households is made up of vibrant adults of all ages and includes many interfaith couples. As a result of our demographic, a spiritual leader has the opportunity to partner with us to explore a wide range of educational topics. Our congregation has grown over the past few years, which is a testament to the strength of our congregation and our programs.

The majority of our congregants are from Greenwich and Stamford, CT. Since we are a small congregation, we do not have our own building, but instead have two long-term facility partners who provide beautiful, light-filled spaces for worship, education, and social programs. The 2022 High Holiday season initiated a return to in-person services and holiday celebrations. Our educational programs and most meetings remain online to allow for greater flexibility and increased participation.

Desired Candidate Profile:

The ideal candidate would be innovative, engaging, warm, and musical. We seek an inspiring leader, teacher, and learner who is interested in working with an adult-centered congregation, and committed to Tikkun Olam, racial justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion. We prefer an individual who lives within a 25-mile radius of Greenwich, CT to facilitate pastoral care and participation in local interfaith activities. Finally, we hope to find a spiritual leader who will stay and grow with us.

Roles and Responsibilities
Duties include but are not limited to the following:

  1. Ritual/Events (held both in-person and virtually)
    1. Lead Shabbat services twice per month from September-June. While primarily held on Friday evenings, we occasionally hold a Saturday evening Havdalah service.
    2. Lead two outdoor Shabbat services during July and August at a beach or other natural setting
    3. Lead Shir Ami’s highly participatory High Holy Day services. Collaborate with professional musicians, Board members, and the congregation on preparation and execution.
    4. Lead several larger holiday services, including festive event programs for Chanukah, Purim, and a 2nd Night Passover Seder.

We love to sing (we are Shir Ami, after all) and have a history of worshiping with cantors. The candidate must be comfortable leading services with music, primarily in person, but also capable of conducting services from a remote location via Zoom, if necessary.

  1. Pastoral Care:
    1. Counsel, visit, and communicate with congregants
    2. Conduct life cycle events
  1. Adult Education:
Teach two classes per month from October through June. Create and lead inspiring, thought-provoking, and educational classes. Classes are currently offered on-line via Zoom.
  1. Leadership:
    1. Support the congregation’s TIKVAH/Social Action initiatives
    2. Participate with area clergy in local, interfaith, and racial equity activities
    3. Write a brief commentary on the Torah portion and periodic messages to the membership for our weekly email newsletter
    4. Be the voice of our congregation by periodically writing short articles for local Jewish publications. Review and oversee content for all marketing and PR pieces.
    5. Attend and participate in monthly Board Meetings in person or via Zoom
    6. Engage existing members and attract new members to the congregation

Our community has an engaged lay leadership that provides support to our clergy and leads our committees: Finance, Marketing, Membership, Program, Ritual/Events, TIKVAH/Social Action, and Technology. We have a part-time Administrative Assistant who helps with weekly newsletters, website updates, emails to congregants, and other clerical duties.

Start Date:  July 1, 2023

Hours/Days:  This position is designed as a quarter-time job. In our experience, the work can be achieved in 10-12 hours per week. There are times when the Cantor or Rabbi will need to work more, such as preparations for High Holiday Services, and weeks that will be less demanding. The service and event calendar is created by the clergy in partnership with the lay leadership team, which allows for flexibility to accommodate other commitments.

Salary:  $40,000-$50,000, commensurate with qualifications.
