Temple Beth Zion-Beth Israel (BZBI) is a warm and welcoming conservative synagogue located in Center City Philadelphia’s Rittenhouse area. Our Early Childhood Education program is a Reggio-Emilia-inspired school with 5 classes of students between the ages of 18 months and 5 years old. 

We are searching for an Assistant Teacher for a temporary position as a long-term sub in a toddler class from March 13-June 7, 2023 for 15-20 hours per week. 

The Assistant Teacher supports the teams in promoting the healthy social, emotional, intellectual, and physical development of each child by providing an enriched and developmentally appropriate early childhood experience guided by Jewish values and culture with an understanding that collaboration among children, teachers, and families is a key element of our program. 

The Assistant Teacher works collaboratively with the teaching team under the guidance of the Lead Teacher. The Assistant Teacher reports to the Director of Early Childhood Education.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collaborate with colleagues to support an educational curriculum based on the observations and interests of the children, including individual and collective educational goals. Respect children as having the potential, curiosity, and interest to construct their own learning. Promote self-esteem, and encourage children’s independence and self-help skills with appropriate expectations. Respond to the individual and developmental needs of each child and engage with children in a positive, supportive, and open-minded manner using appropriate language and a calm demeanor. Support children to resolve and negotiate conflicts and set appropriate behavioral expectations aligned with the program’s philosophy as outlined in the ECE Staff Handbook. Maintain visual and auditory supervision of children at all times.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and Jewish educators to infuse Jewish culture, values, and rituals into the daily life of the children with specific attention to holidays, havdalah, and Shabbat.

 

  • Share responsibility in maintaining materials, classroom space, and indoor play space that inspires meaningful learning, a clean and organized environment, and that adheres to health and safety guidelines. Exhibit willingness and flexibility and strive to assume a fair share of work.

 

  • Adhere to all health and safety guidelines as required by Title 55 PA State Code Chapter 3270 and our ECE Staff Handbook to ensure that children are always supervised, safe, and accounted for in the classroom, indoor play spaces, common spaces, bathrooms, and at the park or neighborhood walks.

PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • BA or AA in Early Childhood Education (ECE) or related field; CDA Credential (must be current); Enrolled in AA or BA; H.S. Diploma
  • Two years prior experience working with young children in a preschool, camp, or care setting preferred
  • Willingness to obtain  the required certificates: Mandated Reporter, Infant/Child CPR, and First Aid, DHS Required Health and Safety Training, Fire Safety Training 
  • Willingness to obtain all required clearances and background checks
  • Willingness to obtain two written letters of recommendation from non-related references
  • Ability to lift and carry children up to 70 lbs.
