Chief Climate & Sustainability Officer

Hazon | Reisterstown, MD, United States

Posted Date 12/30/2021

Hazon, the  largest faith-based environmental organization in the United States, is leading a movement to deeply weave sustainability into the fabric of Jewish life. We aim for this work to strengthen and transform Jewish institutions and communities in order to build a healthier, more sustainable, and more equitable world for all.

In July of 2021, Hazon announced a plan to merge with Pearlstone, the strongest Jewish retreat center and JOFEE site in North America. This new entity is now poised to provide catalytic leadership for the Jewish, Outdoor, Food, Farming and Environmental Education (JOFEE) world and the Jewish environmental movement as a whole.

Hazon’s new Chief Climate & Sustainability Officer (CCSO) will report to Jakir Manela, Hazon’s Chief Executive Officer. We are looking for someone who is deeply mission-aligned and has the demonstrated capacity to further develop and strengthen all of Hazon’s climate and sustainability work.

Responsibilities include:

  • Overseeing a major new initiative that will engage both national and local Jewish organizations to develop and implement decarbonization efforts across Jewish communities everywhere. This initiative aims to exponentially increase the visibility and resonance of the climate crisis across the Jewish world and spark a dramatic increase in concrete climate actions across Jewish institutions and their constituencies.
  • Overseeing the Hazon Seal of Sustainability, a national program engaging Jewish organizations taking substantive action toward sustainability and climate goals. Seal sites commit to a multi-year process of improving the environmental performance of their facilities and operations, and integrating sustainability into Jewish programming. Over 200 organizations have participated in the Hazon Seal process over the past 5 years.
  • Leading organizational decarbonization efforts throughout Hazon and Pearlstone facilities and operations. The CCSO will work with Hazon’s Director of Sustainable Facilities and other staff to develop and implement our internal decarbonization plans.
  • Leading organizational integration of climate awareness and action. The CCSO will work with other key Hazon and Pearlstone staff in the following ways:
    • Supervision and oversight of staff directly involved in greening, food & climate, sustainability and education.
    • Partner with Hazon’s Director of Food & Climate to integrate Food and Agriculture across our climate and sustainability initiatives.
    • Partner with our Chief Program Officer and the JOFEE Programming Team in order to integrate climate awareness, education, and action into Hazon & Pearlstone programs.
    • Partner with our Chief Operating Officer and leaders at the Pearlstone Retreat Center & Isabella Freedman Jewish Retreat Center in order to integrate climate awareness, education, and action into retreat rentals.
    • Partner with our Chief Development Officer and Chief Finance and Administration Officer in order to support our fundraising efforts and develop/manage budgets for all our climate and sustainability initiatives.
  • Overseeing Interfaith Liaisons. The CCSO will develop and implement Hazon’s strategy for participation in interfaith, international, and other multifaceted coalitions.
  • Serving as part of Hazon’s Senior Leadership Team. The CCSO will collaborate with the CEO, Executive Team, and board members in order to craft strategic plans, budgets, and SMART goals for annual and long-term program development.

  • Demonstrated success in implementing institutional decarbonization efforts in other settings.
  • 5-10 years of professional experience in a non-profit and/or Jewish organization  including as part of a senior management team.
  • 5-10 years of supervisory experience.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills.
  • High level of climate and sustainability literacy.
  • High level of comfort and fluency in connecting climate and sustainability issues with Jewish values and traditions.
  • At least 3 years of experience working closely with the organized Jewish community, including both local and national organizations of various kinds.
