Congregation Olam Tikvah, located in Fairfax, VA, is a conservative synagogue of 620 families who consider the synagogue their second home.  The community gathers together every week for a Shabbat lunch.  We also gather for communal meals during holidays and social events.

The Kitchen Manager position is a part time position (approx. 25 hours/week).  The person for this position must be well organized; have customer service experience; be able to plan creative and diverse menus for weekly shabbat lunches, holidays, and special occasions; have a basic knowledge of Jewish holidays, lifecycle events, traditions and of kashrut in general (will be trained in our kitchen); catering or kitchen management experience.

The job hours may vary from week to week and may include some evening or weekend hours.  The Kitchen Manager will work with his/her supervisor to arrange flexible hours as appropriate.

Responsibility: Managing and executing all functions of the kitchen

              Duties:

  • Menu planning for holiday events, services and kiddush lunches when there is no other catering being used
  • Shopping list development
  • Shopping for food with help of volunteers
  • Cooking
  • Scheduling kitchen staff and volunteers
  • Maintaining Kitchen cleanliness and order
  • Maintaining kashrut
  • Acting as mashgiach (kashrut supervisor) as necessary
  • Monitoring inventory of food, paper goods, linens, equipment

Responsibility: Financial accountability

              Duties:

  • Authorizing payment to kitchen staff
  • Coding of food and supply purchases to appropriate budget category or other Olam Tikvah group for reimbursement/payment

Responsibility: Manage all aspects of vendor relations

              Duties:

  • Vendor selection
  • Price comparison
  • Managing ordering process, including timeliness

 This applies to all meals at Olam Tikvah, including, but not limited to:

  • Shabbat kiddush
  • Holiday (Sukkot, Shemini Atzeret, Simchat Torah, Shavuot/Slichot, Passover snacks, etc)
  • Simcha Catering (working with congregants to plan meals, ordering, cooking, coordinate with Simcha Catering volunteers)
  • Scholar in Residence meals
  • Special Events (Friday night dinners, Labor Day picnic, etc)
  • Rabbinical Candidate luncheons
  • Sisterhood, Men’s Club’s and Preschool, other auxiliary group functions
  • Mitzvah Corps meals
  • So Others Might Eat (provide support and purchase of items)

Congregation Olam Tikvah is a small team environment where duties of the staff sometimes overlap, and we all work together to provide the best services to our congregants.
