Congregational Leader

Chochmat HaLev | Berkeley, CA, United States

Posted Date 10/14/2021

Chochmat HaLev is a Jewish Renewal community in Berkeley, CA. We are a source of innovative, relevant, and inspiring pathways into Jewish practice. We express our spirituality through ritual and celebration, music and dance, study, meditation, and the arts, rooted in values drawn from Torah, Kabbalah, traditional and contemporary texts, and the lived experiences of our diverse community.

We engage, we volunteer, we welcome all people regardless of age, gender identity, sexual orientation, economic status, racial or religious background. We are a home for your Jewish heart.

We have a diverse membership of about 200 households. We own our own building. In addition to our Board of Directors and small staff, including a music director, we are blessed with amazing teachers and musicians within the community. We are a member of ALEPH: Alliance for Jewish Renewal.

We are seeking a collaborative and inspiring spiritual leader who resonates with our unique celebratory, musical, and contemplative practices. The ideal leader will actively engage with us in community building. They will collaborate with lay leaders and volunteers in support of educational programming and pastoral care. The leader will work with the Board and administrative staff to support a robust committee structure and to build and sustain a member-driven community committed to actualizing our vision.

The most important duties will include leading compelling and accessible services for Shabbat, High Holy Days, and other holidays, along with life cycle events. Our congregation prays through song, word, and dance. Our services include amplified music.

• Formal Jewish training. Deep Jewish learning and Hebrew skills necessary. Ordination or smicha desirable but not essential.
• Ability to hold the mantle of leadership while collaborating with other leaders, teachers, and Jewish Renewal communities.
• Ability to inspire and take congregants to a deep spiritual level and rich sense of community.
• Excellent communications skills, ability to relate from both your head and your heart.

Review of applications will begin on October 12 and will continue until the position is filled.
