Beth Israel Center is the vibrant, egalitarian Conservative congregation in Madison, WI, dedicated to fostering belonging, joy, learning and purpose. We are seeking an inspiring, passionate full-time Education Director to create enriching and engaging learning experiences for our entire community.    

This position is an exciting mix of creating innovative programming and educational leadership.  Our ideal Education Director is a warm, engaging, enthusiastic and talented educator and administrator who can connect with people of all ages, lead a full teaching staff and cultivate joyful community connections.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Direct Talmud Torah (our supplemental Hebrew school program) for children in grade K-B’nei Mitzvah, including:
    • Hiring and supervision of approximately 15 teachers; 
    • Curriculum development, implementation and evaluation; 
    • Implementing a family engagement strategy including regular communications, newsletters and school-wide programming;
    • Creating a school community that fosters a sense of belonging, joy and learning. 
  • Create holiday and Shabbat programming for families and children of all ages.
  • Create a cohesive early childhood program that includes regular events that build community, foster joy and a sense of belonging.
  • Direct Beth Israel Center’s  B’nei Mitzvah preparation program, including:
    • Facilitating tutor and student matches;
    • Supporting and mentoring tutors as needed;
    • Guiding students through Dvar Torah research and writing; 
    • Supporting and communicating closely with families throughout the process.
  • Develop and manage multiple program budgets.
  • Collaborate with lay leaders and professional staff to align on goals, resources, events logistics, communications and marketing.
  • Engaging actively with stakeholders within and beyond the synagogue to strengthen Beth Israel Center’s education and engagement work.

The Education Director is a full-time position. During the school year some evening and weekend hours are expected, including regular Shabbat programming, with more flexibility in hours and scheduling throughout the summer months. We offer a competitive package of $70,000 salary and full benefits, including insurance, paid time off, professional development support, and annual membership. 

We are seeking the following experience and qualifications from interested applicants: 

  • Experience leading, teaching, and facilitating Jewish educational and experiential programs.
  • A strong background in Jewish life, history, and traditions, including Hebrew.
  • Ability to build and foster strong relationships with youth enrolled in this program as well as engage as a team player with staff, faculty, volunteer leadership, parents, and students.
  • Ability to support teaching and learning through professional best practices, including ongoing reflection, creativity, and accountability.
  • Ability to be available during Shabbat, some evenings and weekends, as well as needed to attend other events and meetings.     
  • A bachelor’s degree is required.  A graduate degree, especially in education, Jewish studies or related fields is preferred.
