Description

Adat Shalom is a synagogue that strives to be on the cutting edge of Jewish life. We embrace progressive values alongside a strong commitment to Jewish traditions. Our shul has an active membership of over 400 households, drawing from throughout the Washington DC region. We take great pleasure in coming together as a diverse and intentional spiritual community for music-filled Shabbatot and holidays while also offering a wealth of learning, prayer, and social action opportunities for adults and youth alike.

We seek a rabbi who will infuse the lives of our children and families with spirit, Torah, and a connection to Jewish values, who can provide compassionate and thoughtful pastoral care, and who will partner with our senior rabbi. The rabbi should have a solid grounding in the history of the Jewish people, the texts, thought and traditions of Judaism.  We expect our rabbi to be comfortable with the essential tenets of Reconstructionist Judaism.

This rabbi should bring:

Education

  • A deep well of Torah and spiritual knowledge
  • Inspired educational techniques, both formal and experiential, and a passion for teaching
  • A love for social justice, and experience in connecting Torah to action
  • A vision to build our B Mitzvah process into a powerful, meaningful family experience from the beginning and into Jewish adulthood
  • Willingness to work with the senior rabbi towards an Israel curriculum that values connection to Israel along with the need for multiple narratives
  • Devotion to inclusion in education, and experience in weaving inclusion into the life of the community
  • Work experience in Jewish camp preferable

Pastoral

  • Compassion and experience in caring through the whole spectrum of lifecycle and pastoral needs
  • CPE preferred
  • Experience in working with a team of lay leaders to coordinate pastoral needs

Community Building

  • Experience in collaborating with clergy, staff, and lay leaders to create inclusive and engaging Jewish experiences that strengthen community
  • The ability to build meaningful relationships across all demographics, with a focus on welcoming new members and engaging less-connected individuals

Additional qualities an ideal candidate might bring

  • A love for davening and a willingness to work with a team of clergy and volunteers to keep our prayer magical
  • A strong speaking and teaching presence on our bimah
  • Desire (and preferably experience) in creating alternative spiritual spaces and a willingness to experiment

Adat Shalom offers a comprehensive benefits package that reflects our commitment to the well-being of our clergy. Benefits include health coverage for clergy and their families, parental leave, disability and life insurance, parsonage, pension, moving expenses (if applicable), professional development and association stipends, annual leave plus two Shabbatot, and sabbatical leave.

The salary/parsonage range is $110,000-$150,000 depending on several factors such as education, work experience and other qualifications.
