Position Overview

The Controller’s primary role is the oversight of the Institute’s financial performance. The Controller will oversee the Finance staff and is responsible for the management of the budget process, audit and tax preparation, compliance, and daily accounting functions. The Controller will also support the Institute’s Human Resources department with various responsibilities related to payroll and benefits. 

Position is onsite in Chicago and reports to the President/CEO. 

Oversight of the Institute’s financial performance

  • Monitor monthly and year-to-date financial results as compared to budget
  • Prepare financial statements including Statement of Activity, Statement of Financial Position, and Statement of Cash Flows for operating and debt service activities
  • Prepare forecasts and long-term projections
  • Oversee student financial aid filings

Cash management

  • Manage cash position and cash flow for all cash and investment accounts
  • Initiate wire transfers
  • Develop and maintain cash flow projections
  • Ensure adequate internal controls over cash and deposits

Organizational risk management

  • Review contracts and agreements
  • Ensure sufficient insurance coverages for the Institute


Supervise Finance staff

  • Oversee the Institute’s budgeting process
  • Establish timelines and budgeting process to meet reporting needs to the Finance Committee
  • Coordinate the annual budgeting process with management
  • Input the final Board approved budget in the financial system

Manage annual audit and tax preparation process

  • Prepare work papers prior to the audit
  • Be the main contact person to the audit firm
  • Resolve audit issues
  • Review draft audited financial statement and footnotes for accuracy
  • Be the main contact person for the tax preparations

Ensure Institute’s compliance

  • State and federal tax authorities including the IRS and Department of Revenue
  • Bank and debt agreements, including preparation of required reporting documents
  • Federal compliance requirements for student financial aid
  • Assist in the preparation of all annual and quarterly tax filings Accounting function
  • Record daily and monthly journal entries
  • Perform monthly closings and related reconciliations

Human Resources Support

  • Prepare and process payroll
  • Management of unemployment claims and COBRA
  • Assist with benefits enrollment and oversight of select HR functions


  • Prepare reports to the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago as required
  • Assist other departments as it relates to financial reporting
  • Maintain updated accounting manual for current operating policies and procedures
  • Prepare other analysis as requested

Key Qualifications

  • Minimum of seven years of accounting experience and five years of supervisory experience
  • BS degree in accounting or finance, CPA, or MBA preferred
  • Nonprofit experience preferred
  • Proficient with Excel
  • Knowledge of federal fund A-133 reporting preferred


  • Salary Range: $85,000-$105,000
