Bet Am Shalom Synagogue in White Plains, NY is looking for a part-time interim Cantor from July 1, 2024 – June 30, 2025, to function as co-Shaliach Tzibur for the congregation. Partnering with our rabbi, this person will tend to the spiritual life of the congregation through prayer and music. Our prayer service is of a traditional style and highly participatory. It is made powerful by our collective voices joining together. Understanding and nourishing the prayer life of our community is an important role of our Cantor. We are looking for a collaborative, innovative, and creative cantor who brings a deep understanding of and respect for Jewish communal life, prayer, and music.

Bet Am Shalom Synagogue is a vibrant, egalitarian, Reconstructionist Jewish congregation of families, individuals and children (415 households) who share a deep respect for tradition and believe in a thoughtful, progressive approach to Judaism. The creative spirit of our members fuels our community as together we pray, study Torah, share lifecycle events, support each other, educate our children, and commit to repairing the world (tikkun olam). Our warm, highly participatory community is sustained by members’ financial commitments, wide volunteer engagement and our open, democratic decision-making process. 

The Cantor’s responsibilities include: 

  • Collaborate with the Rabbi in creating and leading innovative and meaningful worship
  • Primary Shaliach Tzibur, providing inspirational leadership and encouraging participation
  • Collaborate with Director of Family Education and Engagement and synagogue staff
  • Lead or co-lead Shabbat (Friday and Saturday) and other holiday and festival worship, including High Holy Days, and participate in synagogue events
  • Participate in life cycle events of congregants
  • Participate in staff and synagogue committee meetings (such as Ritual Committee), as needed
  • Assist with choir leadership

This is a part-time, on-site position, reporting to the President of the congregation. It includes Shabbatot, High Holy Days and other holidays.

Characteristics of the Ideal Candidate:

  • Warm, engaging, approachable, inspirational, and spiritual
  • Skilled professional whose voice inspires and uplifts our congregation in prayer
  • An engaging leader with a davening style that encourages congregational participation rather than individual performance
  • Has deep knowledge and love of both traditional and contemporary Jewish music, prayer, and nusach ha’tefilah
  • Excellent communicator who values collaborative relationships, interacting effectively with clergy, synagogue staff, and congregants


  • Bachelor’s degree, cantorial ordination, completing cantorial program or equivalent
  • Liturgical knowledge and fluency, (Kol HaNeshamah series, desired)
  • Fluency in traditional nusach and contemporary liturgical musical styles
  • Fluency in all trope systems
  • Hebrew literacy
  • Ability to lead congregational singing
  • Knowledge of and fluency in life cycle liturgy 
  • Professional level musical skills
  • Ability to teach children and adults
  • Ability to play musical instruments - guitar and piano, preferred
  • Knowledge and competency in computer usage (including Microsoft Office, recording audio files, using Skype/Zoom or other communication tools)
