Hours: 15-20 hours/week
Start Date: Mid August - Mid December & Mid January - Mid April
About the Role
Hillel at The George Washington University (GW Hillel) is seeking a thoughtful and passionate Israel Community Coordinator to support students in navigating what it means to relate to Israel in our modern times. This part-time, in-person position is about more than cultural programming — it’s about developing a path for students to connect with the lived reality of Israeli life, beyond headlines, hashtags, and political narratives.
In this role, you’ll help students access the real Israel — its people, its complexity, its beauty, and its contradictions — not just the version debated in American discourse. Through one on one relationships, programs, and honest conversations, you’ll support Israeli and American students alike in finding a sense of home and belonging at GW Hillel. You'll empower the broader Jewish student community to engage with Israel as it is: a dynamic, diverse society full of real people and real stories.
Whether students are seeking clarity, comfort, connection, or just community, you’ll be a trusted presence — someone who listens first, guides gently, and helps students build a personal, nuanced relationship with Israel and their place in the Jewish world.
What You’ll Do
- Israeli Cultural Programming
- Design and implement fun, engaging, and diverse events that reflect the richness of Israeli culture, including food pop-ups, Hebrew language classes, holiday celebrations, film screenings, music nights, and art projects, and more.
- Coordinate several anchor events during the year including October 7th, Yom HaShoah Yom Hazikaron, and Yom Haatzmaut.
- Incorporate a wide range of cultural touch points—from Mizrahi to Ashkenazi traditions, Tel Aviv nightlife to high-tech —you’ll help students develop a meaningful relationship with Israel.
- Serve as a connector to broader Israel-related opportunities and resources within and beyond GW.
- Community Building for Israeli Students
- Create a warm and supportive space for Israeli and Israeli-American students at GW, helping them feel seen, heard, and celebrated.
- Organize regular gatherings for this growing community to connect with each other and local Israeli families through holidays, current events discussions, or simply over a shared meal.
- Maintain strong connections for this community on campus through social media, group chats, and other channels.
- Offer space for communal support during times of crisis or challenge in Israel.
What You Bring
- You have extensive experience living, working, or studying in Israel.
- You have a deep personal connection and knowledge of Israeli life.
- Fluency in Hebrew is required.
- A deep love for and connection to Israeli culture.
- Experience creating engaging programs and facilitating community gatherings, especially in Jewish communal settings.
- Comfort working with a range of views on Israel and a commitment to open, respectful dialogue.
- Ability to plan and execute events from ideation to implementation.
- Strong interpersonal skills with a warm, inviting presence.
What You’ll Get
- Opportunity to shape new initiatives at a vibrant, pluralistic Hillel in the heart of D.C.
- Support from a collaborative and mission-driven team that values creativity, inclusion, and student empowerment.
- Competitive part time salary in the nonprofit marketplace. The salary range for this role is $18,000-$22,000. This role is not eligible for any additional benefits.
- Flexible hours with the expectation of working some evenings and occasional weekends.
