Position Title: General Counsel
Location: Washington, DC.
The Louis D. Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under Law (LDB) is an independent, unaffiliated, nonprofit corporation established to advance the civil and human rights of the Jewish people and promote justice for all. LDB engages in research, education and legal advocacy to combat the resurgence of anti-Semitism on college and university campuses, in the workplace, and elsewhere. It empowers students by training them to understand their legal rights and educates administrators and employers on best practices to combat racism and anti-Semitism.
Overview: LBD is seeking a General Counsel to provide legal expertise and guidance in all areas of relating to the rights, obligations, and general affairs of the corporation, including contracting, governance, compliance, operations, grants, tax, and other areas. This candidate will have a critical advisory role on operational and administration topics and may assist in the corporation’s programmatic work, including public policy and legal advocacy. The General Counsel may also advise on ethics and litigation. This position provides a unique opportunity for a dedicated lawyer and creative thinker committed to the nonprofit sector to join and advise a strong growing organization. The ideal applicant will have proven experience as an expert legal advisor and an excellent understanding of nonprofit institutions.
Responsibilities: The General Counsel will work closely with a variety of employees, senior management and donors. They would have the following duties and responsibilities:
- Advise on all legal matters relating to the rights and obligations of the corporation.
- Advise the corporation on litigation matters.
- Ensure compliance with all pertinent legal requirements.
- Draft, review, and negotiate agreements, including leases, grant agreements, vendor contracts, and other business transactions.
- Advise on employment legal issues, including offer letters, terminations, contractor agreements, and other situations. Own risk mitigation strategies across contracts and legal operations.
- Manage relationships with external counsel.
- Optimize legal operations by implementing contract management processes and documentation systems.
Qualifications:
- 10 plus years of legal experience in law firm or in-house, which may include drafting and negotiating legal contracts and agreements, supporting senior management team.
- Broad-based legal knowledge across operating and regulatory matters.
- Strong verbal and written communications skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work with Senior management.
- A commitment to the mission and values of The Louis D. Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under Law.
- J.D. from an accredited U.S. law school and admission to practice in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
- Excellent academic track record.
Compensation: This is a full-time position with an annual salary of $220,000-$250,000 and benefits.
Travel: Travel will be required.
