JQY (Jewish Queer Youth) is a nonprofit organization supporting and empowering LGBTQ youth in the Jewish community, with a special focus on teens and young adults from Orthodox, Chasidic, and Sephardi/Mizrahi homes. JQY fights to ensure the emotional and physical health and safety of this population. We prioritize brainstorming, big ideas, and experimenting with new things along with making sure that we have the time, energy, and resources to execute on them. We are at a pivotal moment in our growth including being the recipient of a recent $1 million gift for national expansion. At this crucial time in JQY's evolution, we are looking for a stellar team member to contribute to our powerful forward momentum, shape our organizational culture, and increase our impact.
About the Role
The Program Manager (PM) will both guide and implement all programming at JQY. The ideal candidate will be a quick learner, self-driven, and able to prioritize and complete multiple tasks with efficiency and excellence. They will leverage the success of existing programs and build new ones to expand and deepen JQY’s impact as the organization quickly grows. This position is based in New York City (currently we are working in our WeWork office in Times Square 2.5 days a week), and reports to and partners closely with the Executive Director.
You connect with the mission of JQY and seek to serve the queer Jewish community. You keep the big-picture goals in mind and simultaneously hold the day-to-day details with the highest levels of integrity and care for our constituents. You are decisive and have an intuitive sense about when you need to seek guidance and when you should make the call. You are curious and eager to learn. You truly enjoy and are at ease working directly with young people. You take the work seriously, but you don’t take yourself too seriously.
Core Areas of Responsibility
- In collaboration with other staff, determine weekly Drop-in Center programming (in person and virtual)
- Facilitate Drop-in Center programming, including recruiting and preparing presenters
- Create and disseminate promotional material
- Work with other staff to expand Drop-in Center efforts nationally, including developing relationships with diverse partner organizations
Affinity Group Programming (~45%):
- JQYU: A Cross-Campus Network of LGBTQ Jewish College Students
- Guide and oversee all of JQYU’s programming, including creating and disseminating resources, and supporting students to conduct programs tailored to each campus
- Network campuses to each other and connect students and student initiatives to Hillel and other organizations serving college Jewish college students
- Oversee the Gesher fellowship for student leaders, including: recruitment, selection, leadership development, oversight of leaders’ events on campus
- YIP: Yeshiva Inclusion Project
- Create and manage virtual and in-person events and programs for yeshiva gap year students in Israel
- Create and administer ongoing support systems for students
- Provide guidance, based on JQY data, for high school seniors in selecting a gap year experience
- Represent the needs of the JQY constituency to the leadership of gap year programs
- Shtultz: Reaching and supporting LGBTQ+ youth from Chassidish and Yeshivish homes
- Create materials (flyers, bookmarks, stickers, etc.) designed specifically for the target population, in collaboration with volunteers who come from Chassidish and Yeshivish backgrounds
- Oversee community-led outreach by partnering with Shtultz volunteers to strategically place materials around Chassidish and Yeshivish communities
- New High School Programming
- Design and implement new programs to support and empower high school students
- Mentor, guide and support students, particularly those who do not have institutional support from their school settings
- Monitor, evaluate, and approve event applications for all programs
Volunteer Coordination (~10%)
- Launch a new initiative to harness the energy and enthusiasm of adult volunteers (including alumni and JQY parents) to serve the community through programming designed for specific populations (e.g. Haredi parents, Mizrahi alumni, trans college students, etc.)
- Oversee regular programming, both in person and over Zoom
Community Cultivation Events (~10%)
- In collaboration with other JQY staff, plan, organize, and execute all major JQY community and holiday programming, parades, and special events
- Well organized, flexible, and creative
- Enjoy the challenges of working with a diverse team
- Strong technology skills, including basic Mac computer set-up and comfort with Google products (e.g. Drive, Docs, Sheets), Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and social media
- A demonstrated track record of prioritizing and completing tasks in a skillful and timely fashion
- Detail-oriented including strong organizational and time management skills
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication
- Ability to work in person in New York City, including regular nights (at least weekly) and some weekends
- Ability to travel domestically from time to time
- Ability to support programs in Israel, on Israel time, on an occasional basis
- A high degree of integrity; ability to deal with confidential and sensitive information with discretion
- Familiarity and/or comfort working in an organization focused on mental health
- Respect for and ability to connect with teenagers, college students and young adults
- Cultural competence and familiarity with both Jewish Orthodox and LGBTQ sensitivities and norms

- At least 3-5 years of work experience with increasing levels of responsibility
- Experience in creating and running programs, particularly programs serving youth and/or LGBTQ populations
