Director of Prozdor

 

Hebrew College has an exciting part-time opportunity for a Jewish professional to direct the nationally known Prozdor Jewish learning program for 8th-12th grade Boston-area.  This is a part-time, 25 hour a week position in the Teen Learning/Community Education department of Hebrew College and reports to the Senior Director of Adult and Teen Learning. The position is based at Hebrew College in Newton, MA with flexible remote work options. 

 

Background on Prozdor

This long-standing Jewish learning and community building program meets primarily at Hebrew College on Sunday mornings, with some select courses for teens at satellite sites around Boston. Prozdor celebrates its centennial next year and boasts an alumni community of over 6,000.

 

Prozdor runs from September to May and operates on a trimester system.  Most faculty are long-standing and deeply committed to the program.  Prozdor students are driven, academic, passionate, and busy and come from families with a range of Jewish practices, identities, and affiliations. Students may register for one, two, or all three trimesters, and choose courses from a range of interesting Jewish subject areas. The learning is high-caliber, and mostly homework-free. Students and families highly value this program, and many students include their Prozdor Hebrew College transcript in their college applications.

 

Primary Responsibilities for this role:

Recruitment, Partnerships and Communications

  • Work with the Hebrew College Marketing and the departmental administrative team to market and recruit for Prozdor students
  • Visit local schools and area synagogues as appropriate to spread the word about classes
  • Maintain connections and foster collaboration with strategic partners at synagogues, CJP, and other teen programs in the area
  • Collaborate with Hebrew College’s Development team to meet Prozdor’s annual fundraising goals including engaging with Prozdor alumni 1-2 times during the year (primarily through newsletters)

 

Teaching and Curriculum

  • Teach one Prozdor class per trimester, usually one hour on Sunday mornings
  • Support teachers and rabbinic intern as needed, to think through lesson plans and design curriculum
  • Supervise and provide guidance to the Prozdor rabbinic intern (8 hours/week)
  • Supervise 3-4 part-time faculty instructors and offer support, as needed

 

Program Management

  • Work with the departmental administrative assistant and the assistant registrar to ensure students are properly registered in their classes.
  • Consult as needed on billing and student financial aid.
  • Ensure faculty grades are collected and entered into Prozdor database by department assistant.

 

Qualifications:

  • Strong experience in Jewish education and curriculum development and directing or leading supplemental educational programs
  • Familiarity with pluralistic Jewish settings and the ability to work well across differences
  • Experience with and an excitement about working with and supporting a diverse group of Jewish teenagers and their families
  • Ability to work independently with a team of administrative support, colleagues, and staff
  • An ability to teach in-person on Sundays at Hebrew College
  • Have desire to help grow and reimagine Prozdor and teen learning programs at Hebrew College
