Description

How do we help children bring Judaism to life for themselves? This is the question that motivates our youth learning at Kerem Shalom, a progressive Jewish community in Concord, Massachusetts, and we seek educators who want to join us in working with children this way.

In the past few years, we have transformed our learning programs, launching the "Hebrew School Reimagined" progam, an experiential learning environment that nurtures creativity, community, and joy. As part of this program, students in grades 3-6 choose an experiential elective, in which they engage in deep Jewish learning through a variety of activities. In the past we have offered drama, drumming, visual arts, American sign Language, ceramics, and we aim to expand the choices we can offer our students by bringing in new specialists.

Individuals with a passion for a particular activity that could be a vehicle for Jewish learning are encouraged to apply for the position of Experiential Elective Teacher. ARTS? MUSIC?  STEM?  OUTDOORS? OTHERS WELCOME.

Experiential Elective Teachers are part of a supportive, professional Hebrew School faculty and are supervised by Kerem Shalom’s Director of Education and Engagement, Scott Newman. Previous experience working with children, especially those with diverse learning needs, is a preferred qualification. We look forward to meeting candidates who can insipre Jewish children and are excited about bringing Judaism to life in engaging, personal. and creative ways.

Responsibilities:

  • Teach an experiential elective for students in grades 3-6, divided into semesters (grades 3-4 one semester and grades 5-6 the other semester, approximately 6-12 students per class).
    • Topic/activity for the elective to be established in collaboration with the Director of Education and Engagement. Candidates with exciting ideas are encouraged to apply. Jewish curricular resources can be supplied to assist. Just bring your skill and passion!
  • Serve as support staff during Hebrew School Reimagined activities that are not the experiential elective (e.g. T’fillah/prayer time, and community time).
  • Communicate with students’ parents/guardians/Director as needed.

Time Commitment:

  • Mondays, 4:15-6:15pm
  • 24 class sessions (September through May), plus two-three paid meetings
  • Classes meet in person at Kerem Shalom (659 Elm St., Concord, MA)

Compensation: Competitive, commensurate with experience

  • For college students: up to $50/session transportation reimbursement if needed
