Temple Shaaray Tefila in Bedford, NY seeks a Program and Event Manager who will help build the temple’s outreach to the broader community, while leading internal programmatic efforts to connect and engage the congregation.


Temple Shaaray Tefila is a vibrant Reform Jewish congregation located in a suburban area 40 miles north of New York City. Since our founding in 1976 on the former Baldwin estate of 10 bucolic acres, we have grown into one of the largest Jewish congregations in our area, serving approximately 600 geographically dispersed households from multiple towns/school districts. All to say – the potential is great!


The Manager will be a face of the temple to the broader community, to increase the utilization of the temple’s buildings and grounds for individual lifecycle events and group education and entertainment. While reaching out, the manager will support the planning and execution of signature temple programs and members’  lifecycle events.


This position reports to the Executive Director and is ideal for an entrepreneurial professional with strong interpersonal skills to build additional revenue streams for the temple. Occasional weekend work is required.


Increase the number of lifecycle events conducted on the temple grounds

  • Broaden awareness internally and externally for people to hold their lifecycle events at Shaaray
  • Be the point person to facilitate the families’ planning – coordinating among staff, the vendors and all parties involved.
  • Develop marketing and sales materials, process and pricing.
  • Work to coordinate and guide families through their event(s).

Temple Program development and implementation

  • Manage projects and execute signature synagogue-wide events and public programs
  • Oversee logistical details of events and work closely with internal teams on events with both online and virtual components.
  • Be present at programs and assist with implementation and post-program reporting.

Leasing temple property (rooms, outdoor areas) to aligned organizations

  • Reach out to, and work with outside professionals and organizations, to lease temple space, both inside buildings or outside on the grounds, coordinating with the temple calendar and staff resources to ensure those rentals operate smoothly.
  • Conduct periodic reviews to ensure mutual satisfaction with the arrangements.

Develop and implement member travel program

  • Conceptualize unique member opportunities to travel – whether to other countries or interesting exhibits/events close to home.
  • Work with travel agent(s) to ensure these trips are optimized for Shaaray Tefila community.
  • Responsible for coordinating the marketing, outreach, registration and logistics to fill the seats and execute with excellence.


Programs and experiences typically occur Monday through Saturday. This position typically operates Monday through Friday, though evenings and occasional weekend days (1-2 times per month) are anticipated, for which flex hours/days are provided. Our team works primarily in the office, with the ability to work remotely at times during the week.

  • 5 years’ experience with a strong track record of excellent project management, program planning, execution and administration skills
  • Exceptional attention to detail, with an understanding of the “life cycle” of an event and an appreciation for logistical items.
  • Experience managing multiple simultaneous projects and events and keeping track of various priorities and deadlines
  • A customer-service orientation to one’s work, and an interest and ability to interface regularly with congregants, guest speakers, and stakeholders in a warm and respectful manner
  • Team player with strong interpersonal skills: ability to work collaboratively with clergy, other educational staff team members and lay leaders to achieve programmatic goals
  • Ability to operate within a departmental budget
  • Flexibility to work some nights, Shabbats, holidays and Sundays as needed
  • Understanding of web-based tools to update and manage sections of the website, build email newsletters, and create registration forms for events.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
