Summary 

Kane Street Synagogue’s Membership and Engagement Associate (MEA) is a full-time employee who works in partnership with our professional staff and lay leadership to engage our potential and current members with joyful Jewish living and inspired programming at Kane Street. These connections are made through: recruiting and welcoming potential members to our Kane Street Family; finding opportunities of connection for current members; planning and implementing (in collaboration with our clergy) congregational experiences  and programs for Shabbat, holidays and other moments throughout the year; being a welcoming synagogue ambassador who displays a passion for the mission of our synagogue community. The MEA will report to our Executive Director and will work as part of a talented, energetic and generous team of professionals. Kane Street is a warm, diverse, multigenerational congregation, and the MEA is an integral, valued part of our community. The MEA is the glue connecting many functions–communications, programming, membership engagement, etc.–and many different demographics as well, from our ?azak (retirees) and Y-CAS (Youngish Couples and Singles) groups, to our teens, families with kids of all ages, empty-nesters and more!

Duties & Responsibilities 

Our ideal MEA will have a majority of the following responsibilities and perhaps some not yet listed here; portfolio particulars will vary depending on the candidate.

Member Onboarding & Engagement

  • Receive and respond to membership inquiries, arrange meet and greets for prospective members,  funnel them to appropriate stakeholders in staff or membership and follow-up on prospects and leads. Shepherd new members through the onboarding process per new member onboarding policies.
  • Recruit potential members and cultivate ongoing relationships with current members.
  • Support all of our members in deepening their engagement through experiences, opportunities, and other individuals at Kane Street. 
  • Analyze data to discern membership trends to guide your work and to create reports for staff and lay leaders.
  • Be friendly and accessible at synagogue events; follow-up after these events.

Kane Street Community Life (Social & Educational Programming)

  • Create, support, coordinate (as needed) social and educational Shabbat and holiday experiences.
  • Help plan and implement all Kane Street programming with a particular emphasis on families with young children.
  • Support volunteer efforts with programming and fundraisers including assisting and helping coordinate volunteers and attending volunteer led events.
  • Staff various volunteer committees such as the Membership and Engagement Commitee and the Gala Committee. 
  • Serve as a connector to Kane Street’s affiliated groups and foster relationships to enhance synagogue engagement.
  • Send and/or draft/edit community communications of all sorts, including our weekly email newsletter Kane Street Connections, as needed.

Qualifications

  • Desire and ability to be a public-facing member of the Kane Street staff and to reach out to and form relationships with people of all ages.
  • Experience or comfort working with volunteers in the context of a non-profit organization.                                                                                                                                                     
  • Ability to work independently and to juggle multiple tasks in a fast-paced and deadline-driven environment.
  • Knowledge of design platforms such as Canva, Adobe Creative Cloud is a plus.
  • Experience with CRM systems is a plus.
  • A self-starter and a finisher with the ability to meet deadlines; demonstrated ability to handle and prioritize multiple activities and responsibilities; ability to work independently and as part of a team. 
  • Strong oral and written communication skills. 
  • Strong organizational skills. 
  • Proven experience effectively using social media platforms and creating compelling content in various media as tools for engagement. 
  • Knowledge of the Jewish community environment and Jewish rituals and practices is highly desirable.

Compensation

  • Salary range $60,000-$70,000, based on experience. Other benefits for employees are described in Kane Street’s Personnel Manual including:
  • Flexible scheduling is available, subject to the approval of the Rabbi & Executive Director;

Kane Street Synagogue is located in the historic brownstone neighborhood of Cobble Hill, Brooklyn and is both the oldest continuously-operating synagogue in Brooklyn (founded 1856) and one of the most diverse and fastest growing (from 270 member households in 2020 to more than 500 today). Kane Street attracts Brooklynites of all ages with religious services, adult and family programs, a bustling Hebrew School, teen programs, and a preschool, Kane Street Kids.
