The Head of Youth and Family Education at Or Shalom Jewish Community is responsible for programmatic and administrative oversight of youth and family programming at Or Shalom, which includes Or Shalom Community School, the Sunday Family Program, the Family Alef-Bet Class, the B’ Mitzvah Program, toddler programming and the Teen Program. The degree of programmatic and administrative oversight for each program varies, and is shared with the Rabbi.
This is a salaried, exempt part-time position at approximately 16 hrs./wk.
Job Responsibilities:
Administrative:
- Create academic calendar in coordination with the Rabbi and Administrative Staff
- Manage and track registration
- Manage and track attendance
- Design and oversee safety procedures and protocols for all youth and family programs in collaboration with the Community Safety Committee.
- Participate in the lay-led Youth and Family Education committee (YFE) and work closely with its chair
- Oversee the purchase and inventory of materials and supplies for the school and other youth and family programs as needed, including snack
- Manage the Youth & Family Programming Budget with oversight from the Executive Director, Treasurer, and YFE Committee Chair
- Coordinate regular communication to families in partnership with Administrative staff
- Create mechanisms for gathering, reviewing, and incorporating student and family feedback in coordination with the YFE Committee
- Collaborate with Membership Coordinator and YFE Committee on marketing and outreach efforts, including outreach events with local schools and other Jewish groups throughout San Francisco.
Or Shalom Community School (OSCS):
- Teach one of the classes at OSCS
- Review, revise and continue to develop all-school curriculum in coordination with Rabbi
- Oversee all-school programming
- Plan Tefillah (prayer) with support from Rabbi Faryn
- Design and Set up spaces for optimum learning environment
- Liaise with families about students’ learning needs and partner to support students when behavioral challenges arise
Sunday Family Program
- Supervise the Educator for the Sunday Family Program
- Provide support to Sunday Family Program Educator in curriculum development, planning and logistics
Family Alef-Bet Program
- Supervise the Educator for the Family Alef-Bet Program
- Provide support to Family Alef-Bet Educator in curriculum development, planning and logistics
B-Mitzvah Program
- Provide support to Rabbi Faryn and B’Mitzvah Program Educator in reviewing, revising and continue to develop a B’Mitzvah Program curriculum that is contiguous with the OSCS curriculum, and likewise designing OSCS curriculum to support students in moving into the B’Mitzvah Program
- Offer occasional thought partnership for B’Mitzvah curriculum development
Shabbats and Holidays:
- Co-planning and co-facilitating the family services with Rabbi Faryn during the High Holidays for ages 8 months-11 years
- One one-hour family service before Erev Rosh Hashana service
- One one-hour family service before Kol Nidre service
- Co-planning and facilitating Family Shabbat services twice per year
- Co-planning and co-facilitating family programming for other holidays, including, Chanukah, Tu B’Shvat, Purim, Pesach (exact holidays worked to be determined in conjunction with the Rabbi
Teen Program: In collaboration with Rabbi Faryn and Teen Program Educator, support in the development and roll-out of a Teen Program.
Toddler Programming:
- Support lay-led Toddler group in planning and executing programs, including the potential hiring of a Tot Shabbat leader
- Coordinate with Jewish Baby Network to provide infant and toddler programming
Or Shalom Community Retreat: Attend and run programming at the annual weekend long (Friday-Sunday) Community Retreat at Walker Creek Ranch (usually in early summer)
Supervisory:
- Manage the hiring of teachers and educators in collaboration with Rabbi Faryn
- Arranging for appropriate background checks/fingerprinting
- Supervise:
- OSCS Teachers
- Teen TAs for OSCS
- Sunday Family Program Educator
- Family Alef-Bet Educator
- In addition this position may supervise the Teen Program Educator, Tot Shabbat leader and others, TBD in conversation with Rabbi
- Arrange 4 teacher meetings throughout the year:
- Two teacher in-services for skill development, lesson planning and troubleshooting
- Two staff meetings.
- Support the teachers in growth and learning around how to support neurodiverse students.
In addition to OSCS, there might be various Family Education programs and services that the Head of Youth and Family Education might choose to work that will be coordinated in conjunction with the Rabbi.
Rabbi Faryn will be your direct supervisor. Report to Rabbi Faryn around:
- Curricular and programmatic questions and issues
- Teacher supervisory questions
- Confidential Matters/Family concerns
- Finances/Budgets
- Security
Coordinate with the Administrative team regarding:
- Logistics
- Facilities
- Materials/Supplies
- Insurance/Liability Issues
This position will be paid at a rate of $38,000 annually for an 11-month contract at approximately 16 hrs/wk., to begin in mid-June, 2025. There may be opportunities for the position to grow with time as we continue to grow youth and family programs.
