Executive Director – Congregation Keneseth Israel, Allentown, Pennsylvania

 

Congregation Keneseth Israel is a dynamic 265-member Reform Jewish congregation affiliated with the URJ and located in the beautiful west end of Allentown, Pennsylvania.  We strive to serve the diverse needs of our community, including Jews of all races, incomes, cultures and sexual orientations, adults and children with special needs, Jews-by-choice, and unaffiliated and interfaith families.  We take pride in our egalitarian services that are designed to inspire, provide time for contemplation, and create a communal worship experience.  We have strong and committed lay leaders, active social justice and adult education programs, and a vibrant religious school.  We will be joyfully celebrating our 120th anniversary in 2023 and are proud of the sacred partnership that exists between clergy, synagogue professionals, lay leaders, volunteers, and congregants.

 

We are looking for an energetic Executive Director who will report to the Board of Trustees and will work in collaboration with our Rabbi, professional staff, lay leaders, and volunteers.  The candidate must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, and have experience leading staff and volunteers in planning, coordinating, and implementing organizational activities. The candidate is expected to bring a “can-do” attitude to the organization, with willingness to evolve and a proven ability to improve operations.

 

 

The Executive Director at Keneseth Israel:

Has supervisory responsibility for administrative, financial, office, and building maintenance operations:

  • Is the key point of contact for members and prospective members of the congregation.
  • Oversees technology, including equipment and software for security, streaming, finance, and member communications (such as ShulCloud, QuickBooks, Zoom, YouTube, Facebook and other social media outreach platforms and messaging services).
  • Is highly organized, pays close attention to detail, and leads effectively by working well with others
  • Is the principal contact with vendors responsible for maintenance and repairs of the property, facilities and equipment

 

Specific responsibilities of the Executive Director include:

 

Leadership

  • Working with the Board of Trustees and committees as an ex-officio member of the Board, and guiding staff and volunteers, to develop and implement strategies that support the congregation's mission
  • Encouraging input from members, responding to the needs of the community, and communicating member input to the Board of Trustees and clergy as appropriate

 

Membership & Engagement

  • Working with the Board of Trustees, Rabbi, and relevant committees to help define outreach and membership goals, and means to achieve those goals
  • Coordinating and managing new member applications and annual member renewal process
  • Managing the CRM (ShulCloud) database to ensure accuracy and efficiency

 

Program Management and Logistics

  • Coordinating facility use, logistics, and scheduling for religious services, programs and events
  • Maintaining an accurate calendar for all services, programs, and events
  • Managing logistics and administrative tasks for High Holy Days
  • Overseeing all rental programs including logistics, finances and security.

 

Finance

  • Working with the Treasurer and Finance Committee to help develop the budget, monitor day-to-day finances, expenditures, and cash flow
  • Providing oversight of the bookkeeper to ensure that all payables, payroll, and receivables are properly processed

 

 Fundraising & Development

  • Taking a lead role in administering fundraising activities
  • Working with staff and leadership to prepare grant proposals

 

Communications

  • Maintaining and improving the congregation's communications strategies
  • Gathering input, organizing, and assembling the monthly bulletin and flyers for special programs and events
  • Working with the Board of Trustees and Rabbi to advance the congregation's participation and visibility in the community at large

 

Relationships

  • Supervising the administrative staff and applying sound HR management principles
  • Working in partnership with the Rabbi, Religious School Director, Board of Trustees, and committees to support their programming and the congregation's many activities
  • Promoting inclusion and participation by our diverse member populations and non-affiliated Jewish members of the greater community
  • Helping to promote an appropriate and appreciative environment for volunteers

Education: A minimum of a bachelor's degree is required.

 

Compensation: Salary of $75K-90K based on experience and qualifications. This is a full-time exempt position.
