The Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School in Rockville, MD is seeking candidates to fill the position of Middle and High School Spanish Teacher for the 2024-2025 academic year. The position combines classroom teaching with the opportunity to work in a collaborative, dedicated, and highly skilled team in delivering an outstanding and engaging Spanish education to committed and engaged students.

The ideal candidate is a creative, charismatic educator with native or near-native Spanish proficiency, a proven record of enacting ACTFL standards in everyday instruction, strong background in second language acquisition, experience and/or training in curriculum development. 

The ideal candidate will have experience with project based language learning and experiential education, and will have demonstrated success at and enjoy working as an active member of a team. The candidate will possess strong interpersonal skills, have a strong record of positive behavior management, is comfortable with and skilled at working with a range of learners, and enjoys working with young adolescents.

 

Pay is commensurate with education and experience, and is calculated according to a school-wide pay scale. This position is eligible for benefits.

Responsibilities:

  • Teaching 2-4 Spanish classes to middle school students in grades 6-8;

  • Teaching 1-2 Spanish classes to high school students in grades 9-12;

  • Participating in team meetings to review curriculum and discuss student progress;

  • Teaching a weekly advisory or other experiential education course;

  • Sponsoring and overseeing a Spanish club;

  • Working collaboratively within the Upper School World Languages Department and with the middle and high school faculty;

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of a BA in Spanish, Teaching or Education, or a related field is required. An MA degree is preferred.

  • Minimum three years of successful teaching experience working collaboratively at the middle and/or high school levels.

  • Experience in differentiated instruction, student-centered instruction and working with students with diverse learning needs is preferred. Fluency with technology required.

  • Demonstrated commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice (DEIJ) required.

Work Environment:

  • Faculty may be asked to perform their work responsibilities on campus and/or at home. In both settings, the teacher is required to maintain a professional environment.

  • While on campus, classes may be operating either in person or in an alternative setting. Teachers are expected to be present and accessible for the entire school day (contracted hours), regardless of the setting.

  • In accordance with the School's duty to provide and maintain a workplace that is free of known hazards, the School has adopted a mandatory Vaccination Policy to safeguard the health of our employees and their families and the community at large from infectious diseases such as COVID-19 and the flu, which may be reduced by annual vaccinations.
