New Lehrhaus the San Francisco Bay Area Hub for Adult Jewish Education, is seeking a dynamic and accomplished Executive Director, passionate about Jewish education, who will lead the organization for the next decade or more. New Lehrhaus is a revival of the Bay Area’s beloved Lehrhaus Judaica, established in 1974, and thus benefits from being both old and new.

We are seeking a dynamic and accomplished Executive Director, passionate about Jewish education, who will lead the organization for the next decade or more. New Lehrhaus is a revival of the Bay Area’s beloved Lehrhaus Judaica, established in 1974, and thus benefits from being both old and new.

This is a full time exempt position with flexible hours to fulfill the organization’s needs including hosting programs both in person and virtually, some during evening and weekend hours.

Job Responsibilities:

Operation & Administration: 

  • Responsible for planning, organization, and direction of the organization’s operations, and NL's public interface, in collaboration with the Board of Directors and staff.
  • Supervises staff and volunteers, fostering a collaborative and supportive work environment.
  • Creates an annual work plan for the organization based on mission and long-term goals and sustainability plan, with measurable outcomes and key milestones.
  • Oversees and reports on the organization’s results to the Board of Directors and supporting foundations.

Programs

  • In collaboration with the Program Committee, Board members, and staff, initiates ideas for programs, oversees program planning, and reviews and revises teaching agreements and policies.
  • In collaboration with staff, schedules programs and maintains contacts with instructors, and partner organizations and, when needed, provides zoom or hybrid teaching training and session co-
  • In collaboration with Program Committee, Board members, staff, and, when appropriate, outside advisors.
  • Ensures New Lehrhaus offers a rich, diverse, timely, and high-quality array of programs.
  • Conducts outreach to potential new teachers who will bring fresh perspectives and insights to New Lehrhaus’ programs

Finance

  • Develops and implements annual budget and 4-year projected budget in collaboration with the Board of Directors and the Finance Committee.
  • Maintains ongoing, regular contact with and oversight of the bookkeeping company.
  • Reviews and approves monthly payroll and all purchases of materials and services.
  • Reports quarterly financials to Finance Committee.
  • In concert with Finance Committee, coordinates and leads the Board of Directors in annual budget reviews, quarterly reviews, and periodic forecast updates.

Fundraising

  • Maintains relationships with foundations and grant officers, including submitting formal year-end grant reports and bi-annual informal reports on progress.
  • Enlists and supports Board members as fundraising agents for New Lehrhaus.
  • In coordination with the Board of Directors, plans and implements fundraising strategy and efforts.
  • Builds and maintains relationships with individual donors.
  • Researches, identifies, and initiates outreach to potential new funders (foundations and major donors) in the Bay Area and beyond.

Qualifications / Skills:

Required

  • 3 or more years of experience in program planning and management
  • Knowledge and skills in website oversight, virtual teaching, virtual outreach, and social media
  • Leadership experience
  • Knowledge of Jewish history and culture
  • Collaborative work style and skills with both staff and lay leadership.

Desirable

  • Demonstrated experience and skills in reaching out to and engaging diverse audiences, especially in younger demographics
  • Experience working in the Bay Area Jewish community (as a professional and/or volunteer)
  • Experience in planning and teaching/implementing Jewish educational and cultural programs.
