Position Summary:


The Executive Director works in partnership with the Senior Clergy and Lay Leadership to shape and fulfill the Mission and Vision of Congregation Shaare Emeth.  Reporting to the President of the Congregation, the Executive Director is also a member of the Senior Leadership Team which includes the Senior Clergy, President and 1st Vice President.  The Executive Director has direct supervisory authority for personnel involved in the business/financial operations, facilities, technology/systems, development, membership, communications, and office administration functions.




The Executive Director is a manager with the ability to move from dialog to decision-making and a skilled supervisor and motivator who can effectively manage the complex operations of the congregation. 

  • Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred
  • 5 + years management experience in a non-profit or corporate setting
  • Demonstrated management and employee relations skills
  • Understanding of the relationship between the Board of Trustees and professionals, and the ability to work both independently and as a team member
  • Strong interpersonal skills to relate effectively with clergy, staff, lay leadership, volunteers and members of the congregation
  • Demonstrated expertise and competence in finance and budgeting
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Synagogue management experience is a plus
  • Fundraising experience is required
  • Ability to work as part of a team and to develop consensus
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills
  • Familiar with the Jewish religion and customs.
  • Supervise and coordinate Lay Leadership development (Board of Trustees, Committees, etc.)





Essential Functions:


  • Helps to shape the strategy and facilitates the multi-functional pursuit of the Mission and Vison of Congregation Shaare Emeth.


  • Provides ongoing guidance and Lay Leadership (Board of Trustees, Committees, etc.) development to help assure continuity and continuous improvements over time.


  • Ensures that the policies, budgets and other directives of the Officers and Board of Trustees are implemented in support of the mission to fulfill annual and long-term goals through a close collaboration with the staff.


  • Provides primary management and innovative leadership for the following operational areas:


  1. Business and Financial Management
  • Supervises Director of Business Operations
  • Manages board approved budget allocations
  • Oversees and assures the maintenance of organizational records, preparation of official reports and adherence to internal and external policies, controls, laws, and contractual requirements.


  1. Facility Operations
  • Supervises Director of Operations
  • Oversees and assures the quality of facilities and hospitality along with the availability and coordination of technology


  1. Human Resources
  • Suggests recommendations for benefits for board approval
  • Oversees the proper management of staff and volunteers in a manner that promotes team spirit and supports both the temple’s mission and vision
  • Hires and terminates staff in consultation with the President
  • Determines and recommends appropriate levels of staffing



  1. Development, Fundraising and Membership
  • Supervises Director of Development and Membership
  • Oversees and assures the quality and implementation of the fundraising plan (targets/goal setting, calendar, events, etc.)
  • Oversees and assures the presentation of regular updates to the Senior Leadership Team Staff and Board of Trustees on the Temple’s fund-raising efforts
  • Manages endowments
    • Communicates/Works with endowment fund families
    • Coordinates investments of endowments funds with Treasurer and Investment Committee (including maintaining allocation transactions)
    • Promotes, meets and advances new potential prospective donors in the endowments
    • Informs and works with staff on best possible use of new endowments and the distributions from current endowments
    • Coordinates all endowment/Legacy publicity
  • Oversees and assures the quality of membership meetings with potential members
  • Oversees the outreach/communications to create awareness and grow membership
  • Personally interacts and engages with Emet Society and other major giving program families


  1. Communications
    • Supervises the Director of Communications
    • Assures the coordination, quality and proper sign offs on internal and external communications


  1. Leadership Development
    • Works closely with the Board of Trustees Liaison to coordinate Board of Trustees Development
    • Coordinates a Leadership Development program for the congregation


Physical Demands and Work Environment:


  • Ability to sit in meetings for long periods of time
  • Ability to use a computer for extended periods of time, resulting in frequent and repetitive hand/arm movement.
  • Ability to work at least eight hours daily in an office environment
  • Hours include evenings and weekends

The President of the Congregation


This is an exempt employee
