The Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School in Rockville, MD is seeking candidates for an immediate opening for a Middle School Science Teacher for the 2023-2024 school year. Members of the science department work collaboratively in designing and delivering an outstanding science education to middle school students in a supportive, engaging and rich environment which values the whole child. 

The ideal candidate excels in teaching Middle School science and has at least three years of experience in teaching middle school students in general science (earth science, space science, and environmental science), life science, and physical science (chemistry and physics). They have rich experience with inquiry based lab design and implementation, project-based learning, and science fair programming. They are passionate about working with middle school aged students, creative and collaborative, and have demonstrated success working as an active member of a team. Strong candidates have a successful record of creating meaningful relationships with students, are deeply knowledgeable about the subject area, and have demonstrated success in integrating positive behavior management in neuro-diverse classrooms. 

Pay is commensurate with education and experience, and is calculated according to a school-wide pay scale. This position is eligible for benefits.  

Responsibilities:

  • Teach 2 sections of 7th grade Life Science and 3 sections of 8th grade Physical Science, including lesson planning, grading, and communicating with students and families regarding student learning. 

  • Teach daily academic flexblock and performing other duties such as hall monitoring, lunch duty, etc as assigned;

  • Participate in team meetings to discuss student progress;

  • Work collaboratively within the Upper School science department and middle school faculty; 

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of a BA or a BS in a science-related field, secondary science education, or a related field is required. An MS degree in the subject area and/or an MA in education is preferred, but not required.
  • Candidates should have at least three years of successful teaching experience in collaborative working environments.

  • Experience in student-centered differentiated instruction, collaborative problem solving, and working with students with diverse learning needs preferred.

  • Demonstrated commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice (DEIJ) required.

Work Environment:

  • Faculty may be asked to perform their work responsibilities on campus and/or at home. In both settings, the teacher is required to maintain a professional environment.

  • While on campus, classes may be operating either in person or in an alternative setting. Teachers are expected to be present and accessible for the entire school day (contracted hours), regardless of the setting.

  • In accordance with the School's duty to provide and maintain a workplace that is free of known hazards, the School has adopted a mandatory Vaccination Policy to safeguard the health of our employees and their families and the community at large from infectious diseases such as COVID-19 and the flu, which may be reduced by annual vaccinations.
