Jack M. Barrack Hebrew Academy is a pluralistic Jewish day school for students in grades 6-12. Barrack Hebrew Academy is seeking a student-centered, engaging, communicative leader to envision and implement the next phase of our STEAM program. The Director will lead and inspire their department/team members and and our students within an environment dedicated to skill-development, problem-solving, critical thinking, collaboration and teamwork, alongside every student’s personal growth and the development of one’s individual passions within the STEAM program.

In addition to overall leadership of the department and its programs and courses, the appropriate candidate equally enjoys working with middle and high school students and teaching and mentoring students of all levels and backgrounds.

The Director will lead the Middle and Upper School STEAM programs, providing vision, direction, and oversight for STEAM implementation. The Director will have a strong background in project-based learning methodology and classroom instruction in STEM disciplines. The Director will have a comprehensive understanding of experiential education pedagogy and the “Maker” movement as well as MakerSpace design, management, and safety in a school setting. The Director will also have a deep understanding of fabrication methodologies including additive manufacturing, laser cutting/engraving, and the CAD that drives them.

Responsibilities of the role include, but may not be limited to:

  • Manage the STEAM program and STEAM Lab MakerSpace

  • Organize, develop, coordinate, and train administrators and professional staff on STEAM best practices

  • Faculty training and oversight in the STEAM department

  • Managing cross-functional stakeholders to achieve desired outcomes

  • Provide professional development to interdisciplinary faculty to support project-based instruction and STEAM implementation schoolwide

  • Teach Engineering and STEAM elective courses

  • Curriculum design for STEAM courses

  • Manage the STEAM department budget

  • Maintain existing fabrication equipment and procure additional equipment and materials

  • Promote and oversee STEM/STEAM competitions and research

  • Plan STEM/STEAM trips and events

  • Write or aid in design of STEAM related grant applications

  • Create educational opportunities for students through outreach and partnerships in the  community 

Desired skills, experience, and education:

  • Degree in a STEM discipline, MS degree preferred

  • Minimum of 10 years of teaching experience and project-based instruction

  • Minimum of 3 years experience in a school leader/administrator, department chair or similar role in a relevant field

  • Ability to present complicated concepts to diverse audiences

  • Strong technical skills in additive manufacturing 

  • Experience with SolidWorks and/or other CAD platforms

  • Experience with Arduino, electronics, and coding

  • Experience with engineering curriculum design and instruction
