Opportunity Summary

The Managing Director (MD) will report to and work closely with the CEO and will be responsible for all aspects of internal operations. This includes administration, budget strategy and execution, and mission fulfillment outputs across our three pillars: community building, educational engagements, and support & wellness services. In addition, the MD will strengthen existing and create new community partnerships in support of JQ’s mission. 

Key Details

Work Environment: Hybrid – approx. 70% work from home, 30% in-person in Los Angeles, with regular evening & weekend hours for events/programs

Salary: $80,000 - $85,000/year, commensurate with experience

Writing Sample Tasks 

Please provide us with three different writing samples that demonstrate the range of your writing abilities. We encourage you to spend no more than an hour total on this assignment. However, we also recognize that these tasks may take individuals varying amounts of time and encourage you to utilize the amount of time that works best for you. See writing sample details below:

  1. Please review our website and choose one of our pillars of work. Then write a plan to amplify its impact (i.e. - marketing/outreach strategy, professional development, operations systems, etc.). Maximum of two pages double spaced. 
  2. Provide a sample newsletter, article or essay you have already written, preferably in a professional context. 
  3. Any additional third writing sample you wish to share that you feel demonstrates your narrative, storytelling or creative writing capacity. Maximum of two pages double spaced.


The salary range is $80,000-$85,000/year, commensurate with experience. JQ offers a competitive benefits package, including healthcare and a discretionary time off policy, and a fast-paced, queer normative, and dog-friendly work environment! 

JQ provides parental leave in accordance with California and Federal law. At this time, JQ is not able to offer paid parental leave, though we support eligible employees in receiving Paid Family Leave benefits from the State of California. JQ employees may also be able to utilize their paid discretionary time off toward parental leave for up to three consecutive weeks at a time. After three consecutive weeks, approval for additional paid time off may be provided upon discussion with and approval of your supervisor and the CEO. JQ honors parental leave for both gestational and non-gestational parents for welcoming biological children, adopted children, and children born through surrogacy.

Position Description

The MD must maintain a high level of professionalism, possess strong personal and professional maturity, function independently as a self-starter, demonstrate great enthusiasm and drive to succeed, and excel within a small but growing team of professional staff and volunteers. A successful MD will thrive by focusing on developing efficient organizational systems; engaging in a process of mutual collaboration with our professional team through supervision & thought partnership; executing a strategic, long-term marketing & communications plan; and working with JQ’s development team on preparing new grants & meeting grant-funded program outputs. This professional must represent JQ in the highest caliber to the public, in all staff meetings, and with volunteers and stakeholders. A strong candidate will display high emotional intelligence, excellent communications skills, mindful conflict resolution, and a strengths-based, learning mindset. 

This professional must represent JQ in the highest caliber to the public, in all meetings, and with volunteers and stakeholders. This is a hybrid role with a schedule that includes evening commitments about 6-8 times per month, as well as weekend events and in-person meetings about 2-4 times per month. The MD is expected to be present at all community programs and events to foster and engage volunteers and participants and to work closely with the professional team with program set-up or break-down as needed. The ideal candidate will come to the organization with a successful track record of supervising multiple full-time staff, institutional partnerships, and programmatic outputs, along with knowledge of the Jewish and LGBTQ+ landscapes of greater Los Angeles.

MD Primary Responsibilities

Professional Team Management & Collaboration

  • Manage, advise, encourage, and guide the team responsible for day to day operations and oversee mission fulfillment outputs.
  • Provide direct supervision, training, and development for program and administrative staff.
  • Administer and steward grants related to mission fulfillment including reporting, supporting applications and renewals as needed in partnership with the Director of Development, and supervising overall grants calendar.
  • Work with and support the Director of Finance and CEO in the creation of the annual budget and ensure the day-to-day financial health of the organization.
  • Manage part-time staff and some independent contractors (excluding the clinical team) related to mission fulfillment work, such as graphic designers, high school and college student interns, etc. 
  • Support a learning-centered culture that values feedback and the ongoing improvement of programs and internal systems.
  • Onboard and train new hires on the program and administration teams.

Operations Management & Improvement

  • Establish and improve upon existing administrative and operations policies and procedures for all functions and for the day-to-day operation of the organization. 
  • Manage information technology, including communications tools and community member databases, in partnership with the Director of Development and communications staff.
  • Oversee HR functions, including maintaining HR files, ensuring compliance with regulations, and supervising timely and accurate payroll processing.
  • Support bookkeeping and oversee use of financial data in long term planning, strategic decision making, and reporting in conjunction with the Director of Finance, Director of Development, CEO, and Board Treasurer.
  • Oversee communications by working closely with professional and lay leadership to strengthen marketing and communications strategies.
  • Streamline processes and develop new engagement and communication channels including social media.

Organizational Empowerment

  • Support stewardship of new and prospective donors by collaborating with the Director of Development and CEO on site visits, storytelling, communications, and other programmatic touchpoints that inspire individuals and foundations to support JQ's work.
  • Steward, nurture, and grow relationships in partnership with professional team and with partner organizations to strategically enhance and amplify the organization’s reach and mission fulfillment. 

Other Responsibilities May Include:

  • Serve on community committees and represent JQ at private/public functions as needed.
  • Along with the CEO and senior professional staff, provide staff support and guidance to the Board of Directors and serve as staff liaison to relevant subcommittees.
  • Identify and steward major donors and prospective board members in conjunction with the Director of Development and CEO.
  • Create uniformity across supplies, resources, training materials, and systems for deciding fees for fee-based services. 
  • Work with programmatic staff to optimize the use of the JQ’s physical office and event space in West Hollywood (the JQlub). 
  • Other duties as assigned by the CEO.

Qualifications Required

  • Minimum three years experience managing full-time employees.
  • Familiarity with best practices in nonprofit operations, HR, and finance.
  • Experience successfully managing a budget of at least $250,000.
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace and comfort using or learning other tech tools.
  • Bachelor’s degree. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Authentic and deep passion for JQ’s mission and vision.
  • Ability to translate strategy into plans and manage a team towards results.
  • Strong task management skills including prioritizing and delegating as needed.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate and inspire others around JQ’s philosophy, values, and practices.
  • Ability to work independently and manage your own schedule and outputs as well as ability to work in a collaborative team.
  • Demonstrated commitment to serving the LGBTQ+ and ally Jewish communities.
  • Working knowledge of the Jewish and LGBTQ+ landscapes.
  • Exceptional professional and personal maturity, innately strong emotional intelligence, team-player orientation, strong critical thinking skills, and a bias towards curiosity and constant learning.
  • Upholds values of joy, inclusivity, and resilience. 
  • Initiative to create work-life harmony, including a focus on managing capacity and flow.
  • Ability to work a hybrid remote/on-site schedule that includes regular evening and weekend commitments.
  • Ability to lift at least 30 pounds, sit in front of and use a computer for multiple hours a day, and stand for 3 hours a day as needed.
  • Ability to satisfy a criminal background check in accordance with state and local Fair Chance regulations.

Qualifications Preferred

  • Personal experience with or connection to JQ’s programs, mission, and community.
  • Community organizing and peer-to-peer engagement experience. 
  • Experience in a senior program leadership role.
  • Experience ensuring grant-funded programs are executed with fidelity.
  • Experience with communications and marketing.
  • Experience managing HR, recruitment, and training processes.
