Position Summary:
The Department of USY oversees all USY programming, communications, and strategy. The department manages all aspects of the planning and preparation of USY events that occur throughout the year, across North America. Members of the department are responsible for facilitating engagement with Jewish youth at regional, national, and virtual levels.
A key pillar of USY’s growth strategy is narrowing the focus of our staff to concentrate on a single metropolitan area with significant capacity for a vibrant community of Jewish teens and pre-teens.
The USY Program Coordinator (Part-Time) - Greater Los Angeles Area will develop an engagement plan powered by USY to recruit teens to attend existing community and international programs, while developing unique USY experiences for this community. The Program Coordinator will work directly with the local congregations to build their teen engagement programs, while establishing the USY brand outside the walls of congregations to expand USY’s reach beyond the traditional USY chapter.
Key Responsibilities:
The position reports to the USY Director of Community Based Engagement with secondary supervision by the Senior Director of Teen Engagement.
- Grassroots Organizing and Leadership Development for USY: Using a community organized based-model, the USY Program Coordinator (Part-Time) will work to maximize touchpoints of Jewish engagement with Jewish teens and youth in grades 3-12. The focus will be on engaging middle school and high school students in the Greater Los Angeles area.
- Teen Engagement Capacity Building With Conservative Synagogues: All Conservative synagogues have different teen engagement structures, and the USY Program Coordinator (Part-Time) will be responsible for developing an action plan for best serving each based on a needs assessment.
- Community Relationships: The USY Program Coordinator (Part-Time) will represent USY within the greater Jewish community and build relationships and partnership opportunities with local professionals, Conservative congregations and other Jewish organizations.
- This includes helping local synagogue professionals connect to each other through regular individual and group meetings as well as helping them with their own growth and development.
- Serve as a participant of the USY Staff Team: The USY Program Coordinator (Part-Time) will be working alongside members of the USY Team, and will attend regular staff meetings with key staff and USYers, as well as staff in-person USY programs on a community and international level.
- Develop and meet with teen leaders in a local community board- Work to develop a teen leadership board in the local area that will work in conjunction with teen leadership boards in other areas of PSWR.
- Plan all logistical and programmatic needs with the assistance of the USY Director of Business Operations and the Director of Community Based Engagement.
- Recruit Jewish teens to attend local and international USY programs.
- Be the main point of contact for programs and other initiatives to parents, teens, synagogues.

Job Requirements:
- 3 or more years of relevant work experience in immersive Jewish education, whether as a camp counselor, youth group advisor, Birthright staff member, Hillel engagement position, etc.
- A 4-year Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience
- Must be able to design and implement up to three (3) full weekend conventions per year
- Must have significant knowledge of teenagers, teen engagement, and experiential Jewish education
- Must have a passion for Judaism, social action, Israel, and overall Jewish engagement
- A background in and knowledge of USY is preferred
- Experience building relationships and partnership opportunities with local professionals, local Conservative congregations and other Jewish organizations is preferred
- Familiarity and comfort with the principles of Conservative Judaism is preferred
- Knowledge of mental health, safety, and well-being for teens is preferred
Location:
While the majority of the USY Program Coordinator (Part-Time)’s responsibilities will be carried out remotely, they must be based within the Greater Los Angeles area
Even though this position is remote, it requires regular synagogue and school visits, and attendance at community and local programs as needed
Travel:
Semi-regular travel required, including weekend conventions
Schedule:
Part-time hours, approximately 10-15 hours per week
Some evenings and weekends required, almost all of which are known far in advance
Compensation range:
$25.00 – $30.00 per hour
