About the Department:
The Leadership Engagement Department (LEAD) is UJA’s centralized hub for lay talent management. We work cross-organizationally to strategically deploy, recruit, and career-path volunteer leaders, who are interested in serving on internal allocating committee or network partner boards. We also provide tools, programming, and individual guidance to foster leadership excellence, helping to ensure that UJA has a cadre of lay leaders prepared to most effectively steward the organization and the Jewish community.
Working closely with the Executive Director, the Leadership Engagement Manager is responsible for helping to execute the department’s mission and develop strategies and initiatives that further the department’s goals and annual priorities. This includes working closely with lay leaders/donors at various levels of philanthropic engagement and professional staff across UJA as well as with staff at network agencies. Additionally, the Leadership Engagement Manager would generate ideas, strategies and solutions to advance the department’s functions as well as suggest upgrades to existing processes and produced materials/resources as needed.
- Works to match lay leaders and donors to appropriate engagement opportunities on UJA’s internal committees and network agency boards.
- Helps to recruit lay leaders with specific skill set, experience, demographic profile for both internal lay committees and agency boards.
- Together with the Executive Director (ED) helps to maintain and update the department’s Leadership Pipeline via bi-annual check-in with CPAR (Community Planning and Agency Resource) and FRD (Financial Resource Development) departments.
- Together with the ED, serves as the “face” of LEAD. In that role, present LEAD initiatives to Planning and Fundraising colleagues, and lay groups as needed.
- Helps to evaluate department-wide processes, including placement portfolio analysis, performance measurement of goals, and the implementation of new strategies.
- Helps to ensure that LEAD is on track to meet the department’s fiscal year goals.
- Together with ED, helps to design and develop new leadership engagement tools and strategies, as needed.
- Coordinates training efforts and resources for lay leadership, as necessary.
- Supervises LEAD’s Planning Coordinator, who provides administrative and programmatic support to the team and is responsible for producing reports for LEAD’s mid-year check-in, rotations, and year-end snapshot.
- Oversees the review and updating of LEAD’s suite of tools by the Planning Coordinator, e.g., Leadership Handbook, New Member Toolkit, Job Descriptions, Best Practices, etc.
- Manages the CPAR and FRD LEAD liaison tables—coordinating updates, agendas and scheduling quarterly meetings with these two groups.
- Provides input on LEAD Lay Committee, helping to structure meetings, agendas and committee activity.
- Assists in special projects as they arise.
Qualifications and Characteristics:
- Bachelors degree and a minimum of 4 years of professional experience in fundraising, leadership/talent development, or related area.
- Sharp strategist, eager to be a thought partner in furthering the vision and work of the department.
- Strong project manager with a penchant for innovation, an appetite to think out-of-the box, and an eye for excellence in execution.
- Excellent collaborator and team player with outstanding follow-up and detail oriented.
- Able to anticipate department and organizational needs, think ahead and be pro-active.
- Possesses superior interpersonal and communication skills along with outstanding emotional intelligence and strong social radar.
