Position: Synagogue Choir Director, Part-time

General Description:

Congregation Kol Ami of New Jersey is a newly formed Reform Jewish synagogue of approximately 800 families in the South Jersey area, in Cherry Hill, just outside of Philadelphia.  With over 50 members, the choir, Koleinu (Our Voice), plays an integral part in the ritual life of the congregation. The choir director’s primary focus is to prepare the choir for their active participation during Friday night Shabbat Services, High Holiday services, and some special occasions.


  • Bachelor’s degree with a music major or minor, or equivalent experience
  • Piano skills sufficient to accompany rehearsals when needed
  • Conducting skills for guiding and improving choral group performance
  • Communication skills and positive, enthusiastic approach
  • Organizational skills
  • Knowledge of Hebrew language (pronunciation and meaning) highly desirable
  • Ability to lead and perform various styles of Jewish music
  • Familiarity with Jewish liturgical music preferred

Scope of the Position:

  • Rehearsals weekly 7:00 – 9:00 PM (Tuesdays preferred)
  • Summer rehearsal dates depending on the High Holiday schedule
  • Approximately ten choir/synagogue appearances per year, including High Holidays, Shabbat services, and external choral events
  • Selection of Jewish music in consultation with the Cantor and Senior Rabbi to ensure a wide variety of traditional and contemporary music
