The Union for Reform Judaism’s (URJ) Development Department seeks a highly-motivated Development Assistant of Stewardship to help grow the participation, impact and reputation of the URJ and its core programs to increase participation, engagement and financial support for priority initiatives. The Development Assistant of Stewardship serves as the first point of contact with donors, prospects, Donor Advised Funds, and anyone who sends inquiries to the development department by phone and email.  The Development Assistant of Stewardship is responsible for excellence in customer service including timely responsiveness for both internal and external inquiries.  This position is part of a team that is responsible for ensuring accurate data in the donor database.  


The Development Assistant of Stewardship reports to the Director, Major Gifts and is responsible for the following: 


  • Respond to inquiries received through the Development phone line and email inbox or through other channels or departments. Research answers and respond to inquiries promptly and professionally.  

  • Respond to donor questions raised or issues encountered during gift processing which require clarification or action from the donor.  

  • Review donor comments from online gifts for any potential follow up or stewardship next steps. 

  • Actively contribute to development team by supporting colleagues, collaborating on projects, sharing information. 


  • Producing accurate, timely acknowledgements, tributes, and other gift related communications in collaboration with primary relationship managers and other development staff.   

  • Collaborating with executive support staff on acknowledgements that require special attention. 

  • Working with fundraising, communications, and program staff to ensure that acknowledgement letters clearly communicate the intent and impact of the gift and current organizational messaging priorities.   

  • Managing inventory of stationary items required for acknowledgments, tributes, and ongoing stewardship. 


  • Facilitating the compilation and review of donor recognition listings intended for URJ collateral. Execute the annual mailing to donors to verify donor recognition listings.  

  • Ensuring donor records accurately reflect donor preferences re: contact information, solicitation preferences, donor recognition listings, email subscriptions, etc. 

  • Part of the gift processing team that ensures accurate recording of donations in the donor database.  


To be successful in this job, you excel in the following areas: 

  • Communication. Strong written and spoken communication skills are required, ease and comfort in personal communication over the phone and via email are necessary. 

  • Software. Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel is required and candidates with experience using fundraising databases and/or Salesforce are strongly preferred. 

  • Multi-Tasking & Organization. Ability to manage multiple tasks, take initiative, and communicate work status or problems clearly. Highly organized and detail-oriented. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. 

  • Customer Oriented. Demonstrable experience in customer service or donor relations preferred; ability to anticipate needs of others and respond accordingly. 

  • REDI Lens (Racial Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion). Demonstrated experience or willingness to prioritize and execute on Racial Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion (i.e., ableism, LGBTQ+ Inclusion, antiracism, etc.) priorities.
