ABOUT THE POSITION

Temple Sholom of Chicago seeks a dynamic professional to serve as our Manager of Strategic Engagement: B’nai Mitzvah. The individual in this role serves as a central source of connection and is responsible for providing guidance and support to temple families as they prepare for their child’s B’nai Mitzvah.

This front-facing position is critical in carrying out Temple Sholom’s mission to embrace, inspire & matter and positively impact our congregants’ lives and relationship with Reform Judaism. The manager engages with families and their students in significant and meaningful ways throughout this lifecycle process and, in partnership with the Cantor and collaboration with the other Clergy, oversees day-to-day program management and event coordination, including on-site support at B'nai Mitzvah services.

This role leads B’nai Mitzvah program development, strategy, outreach, and data analysis & evaluation to ensure that the experience reflects the temple's values and enhances both member engagement and the member experience, with the goal of strengthening and growing the temple community. This role also supports implementation of the Temple’s overall goals and our strategic plan by enhancing the membership experience, increasing member involvement/satisfaction, and building organizational strength. Success entails working closely and developing relationships with professional staff, B’nai Mitzvah students and their families, members of the congregational community, lay leaders and Clergy, as well as external partners.

KEY RESPONSIBLITIES: 

Leadership

  • Have a Growth Mindset: See the big picture, take initiative, seek creative and innovative ways to develop and improve the B’nai Mitzvah process, and take ownership of associated work and the role.
  • Work across Temple Sholom's departments to ensure staff understand the B’nai Mitzvah program and ensure programming is consistent with temple policies and protocols.
  • Build and maintain working relationships with staff, lay leaders, B’nai Mitzvah families and students, and other internal and external stakeholders to build trust and partnership.

Manage B’nai Mitzvah Program in Coordination with Cantor

  • Serve as the hub of the B’nai Mitzvah program and the expert for all B’nai Mitzvah details, protocols, communication, and logistics, including assigning and communicating date assignments internally, with member families and, as part of the process, in coordination with counterparts at other area synagogues.
  • Build meaningful relationships with B’nai Mitzvah students and families and be attentive/responsive to their needs.
  • Create program related documents, including the annual B’nai Mitzvah Program Guide, materials, correspondence, and reports.
  • Manage student and family appointments with Cantor and oversee tutoring assignments, the tutoring calendar, and tutor compensation.
  • Manage all aspects of B’nai Mitzvah communication and in consultation with other temple staff, design and implement ongoing B’nai Mitzvah cohort programming beginning with each fourth-grade class.

Administrative Support for the Cantor

  • Manage Cantor’s appointments and schedule.
  • Respond to email, voicemail, and other correspondence on behalf of the Cantor.
  • Support the Cantor’s preparation for B’nai Mitzvah, Shabbat, and High Holy Day services.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or equivalent; Associate’s/Bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management, marketing, communications, Jewish Studies, or business preferred.
  • 3 – 5 years’ demonstrated experience in program management. Event planning experience a plus.
  • Customer service experience or work with clients, donors, volunteers a plus.
  • Experience using Customer Relationship Management (CRM) Software.
  • Demonstrated project management experience.
  • Familiarity with Reform Judaism, Jewish education, and/or Jewish communal life in Chicago a plus.
  • Must enjoy working within a small, mission-driven and community-oriented organization.
  • Experience and comfort working with diverse teams and groups.

SKILLS AND CHARACTERISTICS

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office / Office 365 (Excel, Outlook, Planner, PowerPoint, Teams, Word), Adobe Acrobat, and Social Media platforms.
  • Ability and readiness to work outside fixed business hours, including in-person attendance at B’nai Mitzvah Services on Saturdays between Mid-August and Mid-June (with corresponding time off during the week).
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with stakeholders, including staff, B’nai Mitzvah students & families, lay leaders, congregants, external partners, etc.
  • Self-starter with strong administrative and organizational skills, a high level of attention to detail and effective time & resource management.
  • Ability to think creatively to produce new possibilities.
  • Highly resourceful team-player, with the ability to be extremely effective independently.
  • Proven ability to handle confidential information with discretion, be adaptable to competing demands, and demonstrate the highest level of customer service.
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve high performance goals and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Positive attitude, willingness to learn new things, including systems and software, and the flexibility to perform wide-ranging duties.
