Temple Beth-El has an immediate full-time position available for an Administrative Assistant.

Responsibilities: The Temple Beth-El Administrative Assistant is responsible for promoting the synagogue's mission and programs while supporting its administrative functions. This role involves creating marketing strategies, overseeing communications as requested by the Rabbi and/or Office Manager, and ensuring appropriate administrative support is provided where needed.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Rabbinical Administrative Support:
    • Provide direct support to the Rabbi as requested.
    • Manage calendars, coordinate and schedule meetings, and coordinate travel arrangements, as needed.
    • Prepare and edit correspondence and reports of a high level of accuracy and professionalism.
    • Handle confidential information with discretion while maintaining a high level of confidentiality.
    • Execute expense reports in an accurate and timely manner.
    • Provide support for long-range planning and scheduling activities.
    • Develop and implement marketing strategies 
  • Bookkeeping support:
    • Data entry for accounts receivable (donations, etc)
  • Administrative Support:
    • Demonstrate a “customer service” mentality and approach to working with congregants. 
    • Answer phones in the office and provide reception support. Handle or direct inquiries as appropriate.
    • Maintain accurate records of memberships, donations, and event attendance.
    • Maintenance and tracking registration and payments through our online system, ShulCloud, and maintaining and updating member information, new members, and resigning members. 
    • Manage donation lists, collate accurate lists of donations to be published (e.g., in the bulletin) 
    • Assistance at the religious school when needed
  • Other duties as assigned.

Compensation. Your compensation will be as follows:

  • This position is salaried at $41,600-$45,760, subject to experience, for a 40-hour workweek. Payroll is issued on a twice-monthly basis, subject to withholding of applicable state and federal income taxes, FICA, and other payroll withholdings. Future increases will be at the discretion of the Temple and are generally considered annually, taking into account employee performance, inflation, and other factors.

Office.  Your office will be at 3330 Grove Ave, Richmond, VA 23221. You may be required to visit the Parham Road religious school building on occasion to perform requested assignments (e.g., support Wednesday religious school) and to travel to locations in the Richmond, Virginia, area to perform your duties above. Travel to and from locations other than Grove may be reimbursed, following finance committee procedures.

Benefits.  Full-time employees (those who regularly work more than 30 hours per week) are eligible to elect group health insurance coverage when first eligible and at other times during an open enrollment period.  Full-time employees may also elect employer-paid dental and vision insurance benefits

You will also be eligible to take paid leave during the Temple’s fiscal year (July 1 to June 30); calculations of qualified days are shown below. You must give sufficient notice to your supervisor of your requested paid leave days. Approval is subject to the Temple’s business needs based on your duties. No pay will be provided for paid leave days not taken, or for days carried over from one year to the next.

  • First or partial year (from date of hire through June 30) - one day a month after the first two full calendar months from the date of hire to a maximum of 10 days.
  • One full year - 15 days
  • Two to five years - 20 days
  • Six or more - 25 days

Temple Beth-El observes the following paid federal holidays: New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, including the Friday after Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day. If a holiday occurs on a Saturday or Sunday, we generally observe it on the preceding Friday or the following Monday in line with the federal government.

Temple Beth-El also observes certain Jewish Holidays as paid holidays. These can be found on the Temple’s calendar and include Passover (up to a total of four days), Shavuot (two days), Rosh Hashanah (two days), Yom Kippur, and Sukkot (up to a total of four days). This role may require you to work on Jewish holidays. In this case, you would be compensated for 8 hours at your base salary.

Temple Beth-El employees are eligible to participate in the 403(b) retirement plan offered by the Joint Retirement Board. Details can be found online at www.jrbcj.org and include pre-tax contributions and disability/life insurance for those who contribute at least $1,200 per year, amongst other benefits. Temple Beth-El does not provide any matching funds.
